Effect of Weeding and Spading at Various Stages of Growth on the Performance of Lentil

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at the Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh under rainfed condition during rabi season of 1995-96 to evaluate the effect of weeding and spading at various stages of growth on the performance of lentil. Different weeding level had significant effect on grain yield and different yield attributes. The highest grain yield (1610 kg/ha) was found in two hand weeding at 25 and 35 DAE which was identical to one hand weeding at 25 DAE, one hand weeding at 35 DAE, spading at 25 DAE, spading at 35 DAE and two spading at 25 and 35 DAE and the lowest grain yield (1171 kg/ha) was obtained by no weeding i.e. control plot. The highest gross margin (TK.40250/ha) was found in two hand weeding at 25 and 35 DAE and the lowest (TK.29275/ha) was in control but the highest BCR (5.13) was obtained by one spading at 25 DAE and the lowest (4.68) was in control.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of weeding and spading at various stages of growth on the performance of lentil

Methodology:

The field experiment was conducted at the calcareous Gray Flood Plain soil of Pulses Research Centre, Ishurdi, Pabna, Bangladesh under rainfed condition during rabi season of 1995-96 to evaluate the effect of weeding and spading at various stages of growth on the performance of lentil. The land was medium lhigh and soils was silty loam, having pH 7.5 containing 1.2% organic matter, 17 ppm N, 26 ppm P and 300 ppm K. There were seven weeding treatments such as i) no weeding, ii)one hand weeding at 25 DAE, iii) one hand weeding at 35 DAE and iv) two hand weeding at 25 and 35 DAE, v) one spading at 25 DAE, vi) one spading at 35 DAE and vii) two spading at 25 and 35 DAE. It was laid-out in a RCB design with three replications. Unit plot size was 4.5 m x 4 m. The dates of sowing was 31 October,1995. Fertilizers were used @ 20-40—20 kg/ha of N-P₂0₅-K₂0 as urea, triple supper phosphate and mutate of potash. The variety was used BARI Masur-2. The crop was sown in line under 25 cm apart. Weeding was done as per treatment and weed was collected at weeding day from 0.5m² area for dry matter measurement of weed to know the growth of weed. The crop was harvest on 13 February,1996 and data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants. Yields were estimated from an area of 6 m² from each individual plot and converted into t/ha.The data were statistically analysed and means values were compared by Duncans Multiple Ranges Test. All types of variable production cost were recorded to find out the benefit cost ratio.
