Field experiments were carried out at Gazipur; RARS, Rahmatpur; Ishurdi; Jamalpur; Jessore to find out the effectiveness of newly isolated Rhizobium strains on lentil. BARI Moshur–4 and different Rhizobium strains during 2001-2002 to 2005-2006 and a basal dose of P, K, S, Zn @ 22, 42, 20, 5 kg ha-1 were used in the experiments. In 2001-2002, mixed inoculum produced significantly higher yield at Joydebpur and Rahmatpur. In 2002-2003, mixed inoculum produced higher seed yield at Rahmatpur. At Ishurdi BARI RLc-2002 produced significantly higher yield. In 2003-2004, mixed inoculum produced higher yield at Rahmatpur and BARI RLc-2002 at Ishurdi. In 2004-2005, mixed inoculum produced significantly higher nodule number and weight at Jamalpur and Rahmatpur; at Ishurdi BARI RLc-101 and at Jessore BARI RLc-103. At Jamalpur, the highest yield was observed in BARI RLc-102, mixed culture at Rahmatpur, and BARI RLc-103 and BARI RLc-140 at Ishurdi, and BARI RLc-140 at Jessore. In 2005-2006, BARI RLc-104 produced significantly higher nodule number and weight at Jamalpur, mixed culture at Rahmatpur and Ishurdi but in BARI RLc-107 at Jessore. At Jamalpur, the highest yield was observed in BARI RLc-104, mixed culture at Rahmatpur and Ishurdi; at Jessore, BARI RLc-107 produced the highest yield.

 To find out the effectiveness of newly isolated Rhizobium strain/(s) on lentil at four locations of Bangladesh

The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design having four replications with six treatments. The unit plot size was 3 m × 4 m. The variety BARI Moshur–4 of lentil and peat based rhizobial inocula BARI RLc-104, BARI RLc-105, BARI RLc-106 and BARI RLc-107 were used for the experiment. There were six treatments that were newly isolated Rhizobium strains BARI RLc-104, BARI RLc-105, BARI RLc-106, BARI RLc–107, and mixed culture of all above four strains and control. The above peat based rhizobial inocula were used @ 1.5 kg/ha. Chemical fertilizers i.e. P, K, S and Zn were applied in all treatments as basal dose @ 22 kg P/ha from TSP, 42 kg K/ha from MP, 20 kg S/ha from gypsum and 5 kg Zn/ha from zinc oxide. The crop was sown on 21 November at Jamalpur, 15 November at Rahmatpur, Barisal, 23 November at Ishurdi and 11 November 2005 at Jessore. During the course of the experiment, growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. Plants along with roots were collected at 50% flowering stage from each unit plot and dry weight of roots; shoots and nodules including nodule numbers were recorded. The plants were harvested on 02 March at Jamalpur, 01 March at Rahmatpur, Barisal, 02 March at Ishurdi and 28 February 2006 at Jessore. Data on plant height, 1000-seed weight, stover yield and seed yield were also taken.

Inoculated plants produced significantly higher nodule number, nodule weight, root weight, shoot weight and seed yield compared to uninoculated treatment. At Jamalpur, plants inoculated with Rhizobium strain BARI RLc-104 produced significantly higher number of nodule (12.84/plant) over uninoculated control. All the Rhizobium strains including mixed culture recorded identical nodule number. All inoculated treatments produced statistically higher nodule weight over uninoculated control but it was the highest in BARI RLc-104 (10.51 mg/plant). Plants inoculated with BARI RLc-104 also gave the highest root weight, shoot weight and stover yield. The same treatment also recorded the highest seed yield of 1.23 t/ha (55.7% higher over control), which was statistically similar to all other strains but different from uninoculated control. Plant height and 1000-seed weight in all treatments were found to be insignificant At Rahmatpur, plants inoculated with mixed culture produced significantly higher number of nodule (31.95/plant) over uninoculated control. BARI RLc-106 and mixed culture recorded identical nodule number. All inoculated plants produced statistically higher nodule weight over uninoculated control. The highest nodule weight was observed in mixed culture (20.25 mg/plant). At Ishurdi, plants inoculated with mixed culture produced significantly higher number of nodule (11.72/plant) over uninoculated control. BARI RLc-105, BARI RLc-107 and mixed culture recorded identical nodule number. All inoculated strains produced statistically higher nodule weight over uninoculated control. The highest nodule weight (10.53 mg/plant) was observed in mixed culture. Plants inoculated with mixed culture also gave the highest root and shoot weight. The same treatment also recorded the highest seed yield. At Jessore, the highest nodule number (11.40/plant), nodule weight (9.91 mg/plant) were observed in BARI RLc-107 which were identical to all other strains including mixed culture. The same strains also recorded higher root and shoot weight and stover yield. The highest seed yield (1.43 t/ha) was recorded in mixed culture.
