Evaluation of Inbred Lines of Field Corn Through Line × Tester Method

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Early generation evaluation of inbred lines through line × tester method was conducted in maize involving 17S3 lines and 2 testers for grain yield, yield components and other characters to estimate the general combining ability of the lines, and specific combining ability effects of the crosses. Highly significant genotypic differences were observed indicated wide range of variability present among them. Four lines 9MS3-1, 9MS3-7, 9MS3-11 and 9MS3-15 were good general combiner for grain yield and possessed high means also. The crosses with significant specific combining ability effect for grain yield were 9MS3-2×CML 431, 9MS3-9×CML 486, 9MS3-14×CML 486 and 9MS3-18×CML 486 evolved mostly from low × low general combiner parents were revealed dominance × dominance type of gene action. These five combinations might be used for obtaining high yielding hybrids. The information on the nature of gene action with respective variety and characters might be used depending on the breeding objectives.

Objectives:

To determine the general combining ability (gca) and specific combining ability (sca) of the crosses for different traits and to explore heterotic hybrid combinations.

Methodology:

Seventeen S3 generation inbred lines (as female parents) and 2 testers (as male parents, one from heterotic group A and another from heterotic group B) of maize were selected and crossed in a line × tester fashion to generate 34 cross combinations in rabi 2009 at Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur. In the following rabi 2010, seeds of all the parental lines, their F1 hybrids and two check variety BARI Hybrid maize 7 and BARI Hybrid maize 9 were sown in the same farm following alpha lattice design with 2 replications. The unit plot size was 5.0 × 0.75m. Spacing adopted was 75 × 20 cm between rows and hills, respectively. One healthy seedling per hill was kept after proper thinning. Fertilizers were applied @ 250, 120, 120, 40 and 5 kg/ha of N, P₂0₅, K₂0, S and Zn, respectively.

Achievement/Findings:

The good combining lines would be used in future breeding program to develop high yielding hybrids with desirable objectives. The high sca crosses would be utilized for hybrid development.
