Efficacy of Different Rodenticides Against Rodent Pests in Wheat Fields at Gazaria, Munshigonj

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out in wheat fields at Gazaria in 2000-2001 to find out the efficacy of two rodenticides i.e. baiting with synphos (2% zinc phosphide), and Storm. The highest success 84.00% was achieved with Storm followed by synphos bait 80.00% and control 4.00%.

Objectives:

To find out the best rodenticide for controlling the rats in the field

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in wheat fields of Gazaria with three treatments and for each treatments 25 active burrows during wheat season in 2000-2001. the treatments were synphos, storm and a reference treatment. The plot size was approximately two acre in each treatment. Before applying treatments all the active burrows were identified properly. The burrows with rats inside and having fresh soil at the openings including some symptoms of new activities were identified and marked as the “active burrows”. Only active burrows were used for applying the treatments. After removing the soil of 25 active burrows, 5 g synphos bait wrapped with a piece of paper were inserted into the burrows and the openings were sealed with soil. Storm was kept in earthen pot near the active burrows. To compare the efficacy of these rodenticides, the same number of reference burrows were maintained where no control techniques was applied except the closing of burrow openings. Efficacy of the treatments was judged on the basis of rodent activity. After 3 days of synphos bait and after 7 days of storm application, if no activity was found at the burrow opening, it was termed as a successful treatment.

Achievement/Findings:

In the whjeat field the storm provide the highest success (84.00%), followed by 2% synphos best (80.00%) and reference treatment (4.00%). Among the two roenticides tested, zinc phosphide is an acute poison which kills the animals within 24 hours of ingestion. Storm is an anticoagulant or chronic poison. These rodenticides kill the animals by causing haemorrhagic disease leading to death. It takes more than 7 days for killing the animals. Storm is highly toxic to rodents in single oral doses. Since they do not develop bait- shyness, higher success in rodent control may be expected by using it.
