Field experiments were conducted at farmers’ field in Jamalpur; Rangpur; Barisal; Faridpur during rabi season of 2005-2006 with the objectives to evaluate the response of gardenpea to biofertilizer under farnmers’ field condition and to reduce the uses of N-fertilizer for gardenpea cultivation. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with four replications. Four fertilizer treatments viz. T1: 50-22-42-20-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha-1, T2: 0-22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn ha-1 + Inoculum, T3: 0-0-0-0-0 kg N-P-K-S-Zn ha-1 + Inoculum and T4: Control was studied. The variety BARI Motorshuti-1 and rhizobial inoculum (strain BARI RPs-502) and fertilizer elements (P-K-S-Zn @ 22-42-20-5 kg ha-1) were used in this experiment. Experimental result revealed that application of biofertilizer along with PKSZn produced higher nodulation and seed yield (1.95 t ha-1 at Jamalpur, 6.76 t ha-1 at Rangpur, 1.41 t ha-1 at Faridpur, 7.38 t ha-1 at Rahmatpur). Application of only biofertilizer yielded 1.43 t ha-1 seed at Jamalpur, 4.46 t ha-1 at Rangpur, 0.94 t ha-1 at Faridpur, 6.66 t ha-1 at Barisal. It is evident from the experiment that application of biofertilizer instead of applying nitrogenous fertilizer can achieve the higher yield of gardenpea at farmers’ field in Jamalpur, Rangpur, Faridpur, Barisal.

01) To evaluate the response of gardenpea to newly developed biofertilizer under farmers’ field condition

02) To reduce the uses of N-fertilizer for gardenpea cultivation.

The experiment was designed in randomized complete block having four replications with four treatments. The unit plot size was 3m × 4m with a row to row distance of 30 cm and plant to plant spacing of 10 cm. There were four treatments viz. T1: 50-22-42-20-5 kg N-P-K-S-Zn/ha, T2: 0-22-42-20-5 kg P-K-S-Zn/ha + Inoculum, T3: 0-0-0-0-0 kg N-P-K-S-Zn/ha + Inoculum and T4: Control (Uninoculated and unfertilized). Rhizobial inoculum was used @ 1.5 kg/ha. Chemical fertilizers i.e. P, K, S and Zn were applied @ 22 kg P/ha from TSP, 42 kg K/ha from MP, 20 kg S/ha from gypsum and 5 kg Zn/ha from zinc oxide. All fertilizers were applied at the time of final land preparation. BARI motorshuti-1 was sown on 25 November at Melandah, Jamalpur; 07 December at Alamnagar, Rangpur; 24 November at Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur, 04 December 2005 at Babugonj, Barisal. Other cultural management like irrigation, weeding, mulching and crop protection measures was taken. Data on different parameters were recorded from each plot and statistical analysis was done. During the course of the experiment, growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. Plants along with roots were collected at 50% flowering stage from each unit plot and dry weight of roots, shoots and nodules including nodule numbers were recorded. The plants were harvested on 10 March 2006 at Melandah, Jamalpur; 01-23 March 2006 at Alamnagar, Rangpur; 06 March 2006 at Ishan Gopalpur, Faridpur, 06 March 2006 at Babugonj, Barisal. Data on plant height, 1000-seed weight (g), stover yield and seed yield (t/ha) were also taken

At Jamalpur, the highest nodule number and nodule weight were recorded in PKSZn + Inoculum treated plot which was significantly higher over NPKSZn and control. Root and shoot weight were found to be insignificant. The highest pod yield (1.95 t/ha, 121.6% higher over control) was also recorded in the same treatment which was significantly higher over all other treatments. At Rangpur, the highest nodule number and nodule weight was also recorded in PKSZn + Inoculum treated plot which was significantly higher over NPKSZn and control. Root and shoot weight were found to be insignificant. The highest pod yield (6.76 t/ha, 109.9% higher over control) was also recorded in the same treatment which was identical to NPKSZn treatment. At Faridpur, PKSZn + Inoculum treated plot produced the highest nodule number, nodule weight and shoot weight which was significantly higher over control. Root weight was found to be insignificant. The highest seed yield (1.41 t/ha, 75.7% higher over control) was recorded in the same treatment which was significantly higher over all other treatments. At Barisal, the same treatment of PKSZn + Inoculum recorded the highest nodule number and nodule weight which was significantly higher over NPKSZn and control. Root and shoot weight were found to be insignificant. The highest pod yield (7.38 t/ha, 23.0% higher over control) was recorded in the same treatment which was statistically identical to all other treatments. It is evident from the experiment that application of biofertilizer instead of applying nitrogenous fertilizer can achieve the higher yield of gardenpea at farmers’ field in Jamalpur, Rangpur, Faridpur and Barisal.
