Physiological Behaviour, Yield and Protein Content of Wheat in Response to Foliar Application of Nitrogen Under Late Sown Condition

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna during 2012-2013 to observe the changes of phenology and delay senescence for longer duration of grain growth of wheat. Ten treatment viz., i) Recommended fertilizer dose (RD)+ foliar spray(FS) of 0.3% N at 40 DAE, ii) RD+ FS of 0.3% N at booting stage, iii) RD+ FS of 0.3% N at heading stage, iv) FS of 0.3% N at grain filling stage, v) RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + booting stage, vi) RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + heading stage + grain filling stage, vii) RD+ FS of 0.3% N at booting stage + grain filling stage, viii) RD ix)1/2 RD x)1/2 RD + FS of 0.3% N at booting stage were included. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + booting stage + grain filling stage (T7) produced the highest grain yield (4.13 t/ha) and straw yield (8.09 t/ha) and the lowest grain yield(3.22 t/ha) and straw yield (5.20 t/ha) was obtained from 1/2 RD (T9).

Objectives:

To find out the effect of N application for grain filling and protein content of wheat delaying senescence of crop plant at late sown condition.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out during the rabi (winter) season of 2012-2013 at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Ishurdi, Pabna. The soil was clay loam in texture. Ten different treatment viz., T1= Recommended fertilizer dose (RD)+ foliar spray(FS) of 0.3% N at 40 DAE, T2= RD+ FS of 0.3% N at booting stage, T3= RD+ FS of 0.3% N at heading stage, T4= FS of 0.3% N at grain filling stage, T5= RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + booting stage, T6= RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + heading stage + grain filling stage, T7= RD+ FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE +booting stage + grain filling stage, T8= RD T9= 1/2 RD T10= 1/2 RD + FS of 0.3% N at booting stage were included. The unit plot size was 3m x 3m. The experiment was laid out in a randomized block design with three replications. The crop was fertilized with 120-30-90-15-2.6-0.6 kg/ha N-P-K-S-Zn and B respectively. All nutrients including 2/3 of N were applied as basal. Rest of 1/3 of N was top dressed at CRI stage and application of foliar spray as per treatment. Irrigation and crop management were performed as per recommendations. BARI gom 26 was sown 20 December of 2012 and harvested on 08 April 2013. Five plants were collected randomly from each plot for yield component and yield data. Data on duration of phenological changes, TDM, Yield and yield components, daily air temperature were recorded and analyzed statistically and mean values were adjusted by LSD.

Achievement/Findings:

Recommended fertilizer dose (120-30-90-15-2.6-0.6 kg/ha of NPKSZnB) + Foliar Spray (FS) of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + booting stage + grain filling stage delayed the senescence and lengthen the duration of reproductive phase. RD + FS of 0.3% N at 40 DAE + booting stage + grain filling stage produced the highest grain yield.
