Performance of Chickpea Under Variable Row Spacing

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at PRC, Ishurdi, Pabna during November 1995 to March 1996 to evaluate the performance of chickpea under variable row spacing. There were six row spacing viz. 30, 40, 50, 60, 70 and 80 cm. It was laid out in randomized complete block design with four replications. Different row spacing had significant effect on yield and yield components of chickpea. Highest yield was obtained by 40 cm row spacing which was statistically identical to 30 cm 50 cm and 60 cm row spacing and the lowest in 80 cm row spacing which was identical to 70 cm row spacing.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum row spacing for chickpea cultivation.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at PRC Ishurdi, Pabna during 1995-96 under rainfed condition to find out the optimum row spacing for chickpea cultivation. The soil of Ishurdi is a calcareous with pH 7.0-7.6. The treatments tested were row spacing i) 30 cm ii) 40 cm iii) 50 cm iv) 60 cm v) 70 cm and vi) 80 cm. The experiment was laid out in a RCB design with four replications. The sowing date was November 15, 1995. The variety was used BARI Chhola-2. Fertilizer were used 20-40-20 N-P₂O₅-K₂ O kg/ha in the experiment plot. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The crop was harvested on 2 April, 1996. The yield components were taken from the randomly selected plants in each plot. The grain yield was estimated by the harvesting of whole plot then converted into kg/ha. Data were statistically analyzed and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).
