Management of Fruit Borer Pests Attacking Late Winter Tomato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at the farmers field of Tunirhat, Sarkerpara, Panchagarh during 2011-12 for evaluating IPM package (weekly release of egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens and larval parasitoid Bracon hebetor + use of Spodoptera pheromone trap) against fruit borers of late winter tomato. IPM package resulted in 74.5 % reduction of fruit infestation and 23.6% higher yield) over non IPM package (Spraying of Proclaim 5SG @ 1 g/litre of water).

Objectives:

To evaluate the BARI developed IPM package for the management of fruit borer pests of tomato

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at the farmers field of Tunirhat, Sarkerpara, Panchagarh during 2011-12 for evaluating IPM package against fruits borers of late winter tomato. There were two treatments viz. T1= IPM package comprising of weekly release of egg parasitoid Trichogramma evanescens(@ 1 gm parasitized eggs/ha/week) and larval parasitoid Bracon hebetor (800-1000 adult/ha/week) & use of Spodoptera pheromone trap (at 15 m distance ), T2= Non IPM : Farmers practice (spraying of Proclaim 5SG @ 1 g/ litre of water at 7 days interval). The experiment was laid out in RCBD with 6 dispersed replications. Farmers practiced plots were placed 500m away from the IPM plots. The number and weight of healthy and borer infested fruits were counted and recorded during each harvest.
