Effects of Potassium, Copper and Molybdenum Fertilization on Bulb Yield and on Tip Burn of Garlic

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Spices Research Centre Joydebpur, Gazipur during the Rabi season of 2010-11 to observe the effect of potassium, copper and molybdenum on the yield and on tip burn of garlic (BARI Rasun-1). A blanket dose of N150P60S44Zn4B1 kg ha^-1 was applied to all the plots. Application of potassium, copper and molybdenum significantly increased plant height, number of leaves/plant, yield parameters and bulb yield. The highest bulb yield (8.12 t/ha) was obtained in T6 treatment receiving T6: K120 Cu₂ Mo1 kg/ha which was significantly higher than all other treatments and lowest bulb yield of 4.79 t/ha was found in the control treatment receiving no fertilizer. Again it was observed that the studied fertilizer nutrient potassium, copper and molybdenum have no effect in controlling tip burn of garlic.

Objectives:

To observe the effect of potassium, copper and molybdenum on tip burn of garlic as well as on bulb yield.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Regional Spices Research Centre, BARI Joydebpur, Gazipur in 2010-2011.There were four levels of potassium (0, 80,120 and 160 kg ha^-1), four levels of copper (0, 2, 4 and 6 kg ha^-1) and three levels of molybdenum (0 1 and 1.5 kg ha^-1). Treatment combinations were as T1: K0 Cu4 Mo1, T2: K80 Cu4 Mo1, T3: K120 Cu4 Mo1, T4: K160 Cu4 Mo1, T5: K120 Cu0 Mo1, T6: K120 Cu2 Mo1, T7: K120 Cu6 Mo1, T8: K120 Cu4 Mo0, T9: K120 Cu4 Mo1.5, T10: No K Cu Mo. The test variety was BARI rasun-1. The treatments were arranged in randomized complete design with three replications. Unit plot size was 1.2 m x 2.0 m. Garlic cloves were planted on 02 November 2010 maintaining a spacing of 15 cm x 10 cm. A blanket dose of N150P60S44Zn4B1 kg ha^-1 was applied in all the experiment. The sources of N P K S Zn B were urea, TSP, MoP gypsum, zinc sulphate, and boric acid, respectively. The entire amount of cow dung, TSP, gypsum, zinc sulphate, boric acid and 1/3 each of urea and MoP were applied at final land preparation. The rest amount of urea and MoP were applied in two equal splits at 30 and 55 days after planting (DAP). The crop was harvested on 03 March 2011. Data on plant height, leaf number, neck diameter, bulb diameter, bulb length, single bulb weight, and bulb yield were recorded. The collected data were analyzed following MS Stat program. Mean separation was made by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at 5% level of probability.

Achievement/Findings:

Potassium, copper and molybdenum significantly influenced yield attributes of garlic over control. Plant height, leaves/plant, cloves/bulb and weight of single bulb were significantly increased with increasing rate of micronutrients. The tallest plant, maximum number of leaves, cloves/bulb, maximum diameter and heavier bulb were recorded in T1 treatment. The shortest plant, lowest number of leaves, cloves/bulb, smallest diameter and lowest bulb weight were found in control treatment. The yield of garlic bulb was also significantly influenced with the application of potassium, copper and molybdenum fertilizer. The highest yield of garlic bulb was obtained from T6 treatment while the lowest yield was found in control. Application of potassium, copper and molybdenum did not show any effect in controlling tip burn of garlic.
