Performance Evaluation of BARI Designed Solar Pump for Vegetables Irrigation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The BARI designed solar pump was used for drip and furrow irrigation for tomato cultivation during rabi 2009-10 and brinjal cultivation during rabi 2010-11 in the experimental field of FMPE Division. The yield of drip and furrow irrigated plots were almost same. Water saving by drip irrigation was about 52% for tomato and 56% for brinjal over furrow irrigation. Gross return obtained by drip irrigation was found higher than furrow irrigation for both tomato and brinjal cultivation. Net return for tomato was found higher than brinjal. Benefit cost ratio (BCR) of furrow irrigation was higher than drip irrigation. BCRs for tomato cultivation by both drip and furrow irrigation methods were found higher than those of brinjal. Therefore, vegetable cultivation by solar pump was found economically viable and tomato cultivation was found more economic than brinjal.

Objectives:

To design a low cost solar pump for small scale irrigation and to evaluate its technical and economic performance.

Methodology:

BARI designed solar pump was used for drip irrigation of tomato cultivation in the experimental field of FMPE division. Two beds of tomato plants were irrigated by the drip method having two water tanks each of 230 liter water holding capacity. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 60 cm and 45 cm, respectively. The tomato variety was BARI Tomato-3. Cowdung 6.0 ton/ha, urea 300 kg/ha triple super phosphate (TSP) 150 kg/ha, and murate of potash (MP) 250 kg/ha were applied in tomato field. Total dose of cowdung TSP, MP and one third of urea (100 kg/ha) were applied as basal dose before final land preparation. The rest of Urea and MP were applied after 25 days and 40 days after the date of planting. Irrigation was applied when soil moisture reduced to about 20% (w/v). Tomato was harvested in February and March 2010. Average yield of tomato was 66.0 ton/ha. The plot size was 40 m × 13 m (520 m²). Two beds of brinjal were irrigated by the drip method having three water tanks each of 500 liter water holding capacity. The brinjal variety was BARI begun-8.Two rows of brinjal were planted in each bed on 11 October, 2010. Row to row and plant to plant distances were 70 cm and 70 cm, respectively. Cowdung 9.6 ton/ha, urea 375 kg/ha, TSP 155 kg/ha and MP 260 kg/ha were applied in brinjal field. But total dose of cowdung 9.6 ton/ha and TSP (155 kg/ha), and one third of urea (125 kg/ha) and MP (86.67 kg/ha) were applied as basal dose before final ploughing. The rest of urea and MP were applied after 20 days and 45 days after the date of planting. Brinjal was harvested in several stages from January to April 2011.

Achievement/Findings:

The yield of drip and furrow irrigated plots were almost same. Water saving by drip irrigation was about 52% for tomato and 56% for brinjal against furrow irrigation. Gross return obtained by drip irrigation was found higher than furrow irrigation for both tomato and brinjal cultivation. BCRs for cultivation of tomato and brinjal by both drip and furrow irrigation methods were 3.36, 3.94, 1.65 and 1.92, respectively. Therefore, tomato cultivation by solar pump is more economically viable than brinjal. This solar pump may be useful for surface water irrigation in the southern zone of Bangladesh.
