Crop Residue and Weed Management of Permanent Raised Beds in Rice-wheat Systems

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

This study was conducted at BRRI Gazipur with the objectives to compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds and compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method. The result indicates that the rice yield ranged from 3.35 to 3.52 t/ha and the wheat yield ranged from 1.95 to 2.65 t/ha. The rice yield did not differ significantly among the treatments. But the the wheat yield significantly differed among the treatments and the highest yield obtained from the treatment, permanent bed + 100 % crop residue followed by permanent bed + 50% crop residue. The lowest yield was observed in conventional method of planting. Mungbean performed significantly better at permanent beds with crop residue retention.The rice equivalent yield (REY) of DS Rice-Wheat-Mungbean cropping pattern was significantly higher in permanent bed than flat (conventional) method. BCR was found better in bed practices due to less cost involvement in different management.

Objectives:

To compare the effect of crop residue retention and herbicide use for weed control on the productivity of permanent beds and compare the agro-economic productivity and resource use efficiency of permanent bed system and conventional method.

Methodology:

The experiment was a long-term experiment and commenced in Rabi season 2009-10 with wheat at BRRI experimental farm, Gazipur. Five crop establishment options viz., T₁-permanent beds with 100 % crop residue retention ; T₂-permanent beds with 50 % crop residue retention; T₃- permanent beds without crop residue retention; T₄- Semi permanent beds (new beds with conventional tillage in every wheat season) and T₅-conventional (flat), and two weed control methods viz. (W₁) hand weeding and (W₂) herbicide + hand weeding are being evaluating in RCB design with three replications in Wheat-Mung bean-DS Aman rice cropping pattern. For the treatments with beds, 70 cm (40 cm top and 30 cm furrow) wide beds with 15 cm height were made. For the treatments with herbicide, non-selective herbicide Gamoxon was used in transition period between mungbean and rice and the transition period between wheat and mungbean. In Aman season, DS (BRRI dhan39) rice was sown on 12 July 2009 and harvested on 03 Nov 2009. After harvesting DS rice, wheat was sown on 22 Nov 2009 and harvested on 22 March 2010. Again mungbean was sown on 01 April 2010 after wheat harvest. Mungbean was harvested on 24-30 June 2010 and was followed by DS rice. Recommended management practices were followed for wheat, mungbean and rice cultivation.

Mungbean performed significantly better at permanent beds with crop residue retention. Comparable grain yields of rice were obtained from conventional flat land and different permanent beds. Significantly higher grain yields of wheat was produced by permanent beds with 100 % crop residue retention. The Rice equivalent yield (REY) of DS Rice-Wheat-Mungbean cropping pattern was significantly higher in permanent bed practices (12.14) than flat (conventional) method. As REY was higher in bed than flat method, BCR was found better in bed practices due to less cost involvement in different management.
