Evaluation of Sesbania Application and Weed Management Practices in T. Aman Under Boro-fallow-t. Aman Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Evaluation of Sesbania application and weed management in T. Aman rice in Boro-Fallow-T. Aman cropping pattern indicated that Sesbania incorporation on weed suppression did not show any significant effect on grain yield. Sesbania incorporation before T. Aman rice significantly influenced grain yield.

Objectives:

To identify suitable weed management practices under Sesbania application in T.Aman under Boro-Fallow-T.Aman cropping pattern

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted during Aman season, 2009 at BRRI, Gazipur. BRRI dhan49 was used in T. Aman season, where Sesbania was incorporated on two different dates (30 DAS and 40 DAS) and by two different methods (by herbicide application and by ploughing down). Thus treatments were herbicide application on 30 day old Sesbania (S₁), herbicide application on 40 day old Sesbania 40 day old Sesbania (S₂), 40 day old Sesbania was ploughed down (S₃) and no Sesbania (S₀). On the other hand, weeding was done in different times after transplanting. Hand weeding at 15, 30 and 45 DAT (W₁), at 30 and 45 DAT (W₂), at 45 DAT (W₃) and no weeding (W₄) were executed in the experiment to evaluate the effect of Sesbania on weed suppression. In Boro season, BRRI dhan29 was used as blank crop. The experiment was laid out in RCB design with three replications.

Achievement/Findings:

Sesbania incorporation on weed suppression did not show any significant effect on grain yield. Irrespective of weeding method Sesbania incorporation before T. Aman rice significantly influenced grain yield. Sesbania incorporation by applying herbicide 40 days after seeding (S₃) gave the highest yield (5.363), where no Sesbania (S₁) gave lowest yield (4.722). S₂ and S₄ were statistically similar. Irrespective of Sesbania application hand weeding at 15, 30 and 45 DAT (W₁) gave the highest yield (5.242) which was statistically similar to W₂ and W₃. In Boro season BRRI dhan29 was transplanted 13 January ’2010 and harvested at 12 May’ 10. The grain yield of Boro was 7 t/ha.
