Under late situation, double transplanting done on the same day of normal transplanting (25 September in T. Aman and 25 February in Boro) gave significantly higher grain yield than that of normal transplanting in both T. Aman and Boro seasons.

The experiment was conducted during T. Aman and Boro, 2009-10 seasons at BRRI farm, Gazipur. In this experiment five planting methods with three varieties were used. The design of the experiment was RCB with three replications. In T. Aman season, treatments were: Factor A: Planting methods under different time of transplanting: T1- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 July; T2- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 August; T3- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanting on 25 September; T4- Normal transplanting with 60 days old seedling transplanting on 25 September; T5- Double transplanting with (30+30) days old seedling (1st TP: 25 August; 2nd TP 25 September; sowing 25 July) and Factor B: Variety: V1- BRRI dhan49, V2 – BR22 and V3 - BRRI dhan46. In Boro, under factor A: Planting method: T1- Normal transplanting with 30 days old seedling transplanted on 25 December; T2- Normal transplanting with 40 days old seedling transplanted on 15 January; T3- Normal transplanting with 40 days old seedling transplanted on 25 February; T4- Normal transplanting with 80 days old seedling transplanted on 25 February; T5- Double transplanting with (40+40) days old seedling (1st TP: 15 January; 2nd TP 25 February; sowing 05 December). For factor B: Variety: V1- BRRI dhan28, V2 – BRRI dhan29 and V3 - BRRI dhan45 were used. Nitrogen, P, K, S and Zn were applied as per recommendation. Except urea all fertilizers were applied during final land preparation. Urea was applied in three equal split but in T4 and T5 only two splits were applied. Recommended management practices followed for the T. Aman and Boro rice in main field for different treatments.

The results of the study revealed that the effect of establishment method and interaction between establishment methods and variety was significant for all the studied parameters in both T. Aman and Boro seasons. Effect of variety was significant for all the parameters in T. Aman season except panicle/m2 in Boro season and grain/panicle in T. Aman season. In T. Aman season, all the varieties gave the highest grain yield in optimum time normal transplanting method (T1). In T1 and T2 establishment method, BRRI dhan49 gave the highest grain yield of 6.33 t/ha and 5.52 t/ha, respectively, among the tested varieties. While BRRI dhan46 gave the highest grain yield of 4.43 t/ha among the tested varieties in T3 establishment method. All the tested varieties gave the lowest yield in T4 establishment method where 60 days-old seedling was transplanted on 25 September. Double transplanting (T5) of all the tested varieties on the same day gave significantly higher yield than T4 establishment method. The grain yield of all the three varieties established in double transplanting method were comparable to those obtained in T2 and T3 establishment methods. The effect of double transplanting was more pronounced in Boro season where all the varieties (BRRI dhan28, BRRI dhan29 and BRRI dhan45) gave similar yield in double transplanting (T5) to that obtained in normal transplanting (T2). The lowest yield of all the varieties was obtained in T4 establishment method, which was transplanted on 25 February on the same day of double transplanting in normal transplanting method.
