Productivity Evaluation of Boro-fallow-t. Aman Cropping Pattern as Influenced by Establishment Method of Boro Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Objective of this study was to compare productivity of T. Aman-Boro cropping pattern due to establishment method of Boro rice. The experiment was conducted in T. Aman 2009 and Boro 2009-10 at BRRI farm, Gazipur. BRRI dhan49 was used in T. Aman. In a comparison of transplanting with direct seeding in Boro rice, transplanted BRRI dhan29 gave 6.02 t/ha grain yield which was 23.10 and 13.16 % higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively.

Objectives:

To compare productivity of T. Aman-Boro cropping pattern due to establishment method of Boro rice

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in T. Aman 2009 and Boro 2009-10 at BRRI farm, Gazipur. BRRI dhan49 was used in T. Aman. In Boro, the treatments were: broadcast (T₁), drum seeding (T₂) and transplanting with 30 day-old seedling (T₃) were done on the same day on December 10, 2009. Transplanting was also done on 05 (T₄) and 20 (T₅) January, 2010 with 40 day-old seedlings. The variety, BRRI dhan29 was used in the experiment. The experiment was conducted in RCB design with three replications. The recommended management practices were followed.

Achievement/Findings:

During T. Aman, BRRI dhan49 gave 5.91 t/ha grain yield as blank crop and it was harvested 25 days before direct seeding of Boro. Irrespective of time, transplanted BRRI dhan29 gave 6.02 t/ha grain yield which was 23.10 and 13.16 % higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively. The highest grain yield of 6.42 t/ha was obtained in T₃ treatment which was 31 and 21% higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively. In T₅ treatment, where seeds were shown in seedbed on the same day (10 December) of direct seeding in the main field, yielded 5.57 t/ha grain yield which was also 14 and 5% higher than broadcast and drum seeding, respectively. Duration was 12-16 days less in drum seeding than transplanting but main field duration was 14-28 days more in drum seeding than transplanting. Therefore, the scope of increasing cropping intensity through direct seeding is less than transplanting. The claim for higher yield and scope of increased cropping intensity in direct seeding was not found valid in the study.
