Effect of Planting Time and Seedling Age on Yield of Boro Rice in T. Aman-potato-boro/dt Boro Cropping Pattern

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Farmers use to plant potato in the late November to early December which delays the Boro transplanting in late February to early March sometimes and even some cases 2^nd week of March which reduces the Boro yield and thus affects the total cropping system productivity. Double transplanting with 75 days tiller (35 days in seedbed and 40 days in the 1^st transplanted plot) gave higher grain yield than older (75 and 60 days old) and recommended (45 days) age of seedlings. The higher grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m² and filled grains per panicle. Double transplanting enhanced crop maturity by 2-12 days than other seedling age.The result of effect of planting time and seedling age DT Boro revealed that irrespective of seedling age planting of Boro rice on 20 February after potato gave higher grain yield than that of 28 February and 08 March planting. On the other hand, double transplanting of Boro rice with 75 days tiller increased the grain yield of 19, 15 and 12% over seedling age of 45, 60 and 75 days, respectively.

Objectives:

Methodology:

The study was conducted at the experimental farm, BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur during Boro season 2009-10. During T. Aman, BR11 was transplanted with 33 day old seedlings on 20 August. It was harvested on 02 December 2009. Potato was planted on 15 December applying recommended rate of fertilizers (161, 44, 130, 22 and 4 kg ha-1 N, P, K, S, and Zn, respectively) and harvested on 19 February, 27 February and 7 March before Boro planting. The three time of planting, 20, 28 February and 08 March, and four seedling age, 75, 60, 45 and with 75 days as double transplanting (35 in the seedbed and 40 as 1st transplanted) were tested in Boro season in a randomized complete block design with three replications. BRRI dhan29 was used in the experiment. In case of DT Boro, in 1st transplanted plot, 9 seedlings/hill were planted at a spacing of 15x15 cm. Tillers of 1st planted crop at the rate of 6 tillers/hill were transplanted while 2-3 seedlings were used in other treatments. Fifty percent of the AEZ based recommended P, K, S and Zn were used in all the treatment plots. Nitrogen was applied as per recommendation. Other management practices were followed as per recommendation.

Double transplanting with 75 days tiller (35 days in seedbed and 40 days in the 1st transplanted plot) gave higher grain yield (5.69 t/ha) than older (75 and 60 days old) and recommended (45 days) age of seedlings. The higher grain yield was attributed to higher number of panicles/m² and filled grains per panicle. Double transplanting enhanced crop maturity by 2-12 days than other seedling age. Results revealed that irrespective of seedling age planting of Boro rice on 20 February after potato gave higher grain yield than that of 28 February and 08 March planted treatments.
