Effect of Integrated Nutrient Management on the Processing Quality of Potato

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted at TCRC, Joydebpur, Gazipur during the rabi season of 2012-2013 to study the effect of integrated nutrient management on processing quality and yield of potato. Seven treatments comprising different doses of nutrients were applied to the potato variety Asterix. Results revealed that 120% STB of NPKS produced the highest yield (36.00 t/ha) which was identical to 100% STB dose. Treatments T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 performed better for chips while T1, T3 T4 produce better qualities French fries.

Objectives:

To study the effect of integrated nutrients on processing quality and yield of potato.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at Joydebpur during the cropping season of 2012-2013. The initial soil samples of the experimental field were collected and analyzed following standard methods. Seven treatments were T1: 100% NPKS (STB)*, T2: 100%STB (80% Chemical source + 20% Organic source**), T3: 120% T1, T4: 80% T1, T5: Existing dose of TCRC, T6: Farmers Dose and T7: Control (Without fertilizer).The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Variety Asterix was used as planting material. The unit plot size was 3 m x 3 m. Potato was planted on 28 Nov 2012, maintaining 60 cm x 25 cm spacing between two rows and from tuber to tuber. Cowdung, Urea, TSP, MoP, Gypsum and Zinc sulphate were used as the source of NPKS and Zn, respectively. Entire quantity of cowdung, potassium, Phosphorous, Sulphur, Zinc and half of nitrogen were applied before planting and mixed with soil. Remaining nitrogen was applied at the side of the row and covered with soil at 32 DAP during the time of earthing up. Other agronomic practices were done according as and when necessary. Data were analyzed using crop-stat software.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest yield (36.00 t/ha) of potato was found in T3 which was statistically identical to 100% STB. For achieving the quality processing tuber 100% STB dose formulated with 80% inorganic fertilizer and 20% organic manure appeared as the best suited fertilizer combination. Treatments T1, T2, T3, T4, and T5 performed better for chips while T1, T3, T4 produce better qualities French fries. The treatment T3 gave the best performance for yield and processing quality.
