Effect of Bacterial Fertilizer on Chickpea

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted at BARI central farm, Joydebpur during rabi season of 2002-2003 with the objectives to find out the efficiency of bacterial inoculum on chickpea. The variety BARI Chola-5 and the rhizobial inoculum (Rhizobium strain RCa-IC-59) were used in this experiment. Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number and nodule weight compared to other treatments without inoculum. Although fertilizer combination of 50-20-40-20 kg N-P-K-S t ha^-1 produced higher seed yield of 1.56 t ha^-1 (36% higher over native fertilization) but statistically similar seed yields were also observed from only inoculum treated plants (1.40 t ha^-1, 21% higher over native fertilization) and plants receiving 20-40-20 kg N-P-K-S ha^-1 fertilizer plus inoculum (1.48 t ha^-1, 29% higher over native fertilization)

Objectives:

To find out the use efficiency of bacterial inoculum on chickpea

Methodology:

Chickpea was sown on November 11 2002 at Joydebpur. The experiment was designed in RCBD having 4 replications for each treatment and unit plot size was 5m x 4m. The variety BARI Chhola-5 of chickpea and peat based rhizobial inoculum (strain RCa-IC-59) were used for the experiment. There were six treatments (50-20-40-20 kg N-P-K-S/ha, 20-20-40-20 kg N-P-K-S/ha, 20-40-20 kg P-K-S/ha, 20-40-20 kg P-K-S/ha + Inoculum, only inoculum and native fertilization. Where relevant, the above rhizobial inoculum and chemical fertilizers were used @ 1.5 kg inoculum/ha, nitrogen from urea, phosphorus from TSP, potash from MP and sulphur from gypsum. Seed rate was 50 kg/ha and line to line distance was 40 cm and seeds were placed at 10 cm distance. All fertilizers were applied at final land preparation and bio-fertilizer was applied through seed inoculation. Plants were irrigated at 47 days after sowing and three weedings were done. Cimbush was applied at thrice at whole life cycle of the crop. During the course of the experiment growth and development of plants in the field were carefully observed. Plants along with roots were collected at 50% flowering stage from each unit plot and dry weight of nodules including nodule numbers were taken. Plants were harvested on April 27, 2003. Dry weight of seed and stover for each unit plot was also recorded.

Achievement/Findings:

Inoculated plants gave significantly higher nodule number and nodule weight compared to other treatments without inoculum. Plant receiving 20-40-20 kg P-K-S/ha plus inoculum recorded higher nodule number of 165/5 plants, which was statistically higher over other treatments except only inoculated plants and 50-20-40-20 kg N-P-K-S/ha treatment. Similarly 20-40-20 kg P-K-S/ha plus inoculum treated plants produced statistically weighted nodules of 0.79 g/5 plants. If we consider plant height and thousand seed weight then we can see that either chemical fertilizers or bio-fertilizer had no effect on the parameters. Number of pods per plant is one of the important yield contributing characters and 20-40-20 kg P-K-S/ha plus inoculum treated plants produced significantly higher number of pods per plant but all other treatments were statistically similar.
