Effect of peat based inoculant prepared with Bradyrhizobium strain (RAh-892) on nodulation, dry matter weight and pod yield of Zhingabadam, BARI Chinabadam-5, BARI Chinabadam-6 and ICGV-89259 was studied in a field trial against an uninoculated control at BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS, Jamalpur during the rabi season of 2002-2003 and 2003-2004. The plot sise was 5 m x 4 m. The experiment was designed in Randomized Complete Block Design with eight treatments and four replications.a basal dose of PKS (22 kg P, 42 kg K, 40 kg S ha-1) were applied at the time of sowing. Higher nodulation, dry matter production and pod yield were recorded in the inoculated treatments in both the years. All the inoculated varieties gave significantly higher nodule number, weight and pod yield over uninoculated control in both the years. The variety BARI Chinadabadam-6 gave the highest nodule number, nodule weight, stover yield and also pod yields compared to other varieties in both the years and locations under the study.

  1. To find out the most suitable varieties for this purpose.
  2. To study the effectiveness of Bradyrhizobium with different varieties of groundnut.

The field experiment was carried out at the Central Farm of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Joydebpur, Gazipur and RARS, Jamalpur during rabi season of 2003-2004. Two levels of Bradhyrhizobium strain (RAh-892) uninoculatcd and inoculated were used in this experiment with four varieties such as Zhingabadam, BARI Chinabadam-5, BARI Chinabadam-6 and ICGV-89259. The strain (RAh-892) was used from Soil Microbiology Laboratory, Soil Science Division, BARl, Gazipur. The experiment was deigned in RCBD with 8 treatment combinations and 4 replications. The plot size was 5m x 4m. The experiment was deigned in RCBD with 8 treatments and 4 replications. A basal dose of PKS (440g, 340g and 446g) was applied at the time of sowing. Soil samples were collected before sowing from 0-15 cm depth and analyzed for the physico-chemical properties and the native rhizobia population. The soil was Grey Terrace with pH 6.5, organic matter 1.1%, total nitrogen 0.06, available P 13 µg/g, exchangeable K 0.30 meq/100g at Joydebpur. The soil of Jamalpur was Grey Floodplain with pH 7.2 organic matter 1.5%, Total N 0.09%, available15 µg/g, exchangeable 0.40 meq/100g. K The initial rhizobial population were 4.8 x 104 no./g soil at Joydebpur and 5.5 x 105 no./g soil at Jamalpur. The seeds were sown on 6th December at Joydebpur and 10th December at Jamalpur 2003 a row spacing of 40 cm and plant spacing of 20 cm. Ten randomly selected plants were uprooted to study nodule number, dry weight of nodule and shoots at 60 days stage. The crop was harvested on 6th June at Joydebpur and 9th May 2004 at Jamalpur. Dry weight of pods and stover were recorded form each plot excluding the border line in each side.

Overall results revealed that the variety ICGV -89259 showed better performance among the four varieties. However, the yield performance of groundnut varieties was greater in Joydebpur soil than Jamalpur soil. The Bradhyrhizobium strain RAh-892 is suitable for all the varieties. Because it proved its efficiency in nodulation, plant growth and yields equally in all the varieties. However, wide variations in nodulation and yield performances in two different sites require further investigation.
