Effect of Different Levels of Potassium Fertilization on Yield and Quality of BARI Morich-1

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A field experiment was conducted to observe the response of chilli (BARI Morich-1) on different levels of potassium in order to determine the optimum requirement of the potassium for achieving satisfactory dry capsules of this crop. The five levels of potassium (0, 50,100,150 and 200 kg/ ha) distributed in the plots along with recommended dose of nitrogen. The maximum yield of dry capsules of 1.8 t/ ha was obtained with the application of K150 kg/ ha as similar yield with the application of higher dose (K200) of potassium.

Objectives:

To find out the optimum doses of potassium for maximizing the production of commercial quality of chilli.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Spices Research Centre, Gazipur during the period from October, 2009 to May 2010 with a view to find out the optimum requirement of potassium for chilli cultivation. The crop used in the experiments was a high yielding variety of chilli BARI Morich-1. The treatments included 5 levels potassium viz. 0, 50,100,150, & 200 kg ha-1were used in this study. In addition, a blanket dose cow dung 5 t/ha, nitrogen (150 kg/ha), phosphorus (60 kg/ ha), Sulfur (30 kg/ ha), zinc oxide 2.0 kg/ ha and magnesium oxide 1.0 kg/ ha were used in the study. The experiment was laid out in a Randomized Complete Block Design (RCBD) with 5 treatments and 3 replications. The unit plot size was 2 m x 2 m. The plants were transplanted on 19 November, 2009 with spacing 40cm x 30cm. Necessary intercultural operations were done throughout the cropping season for proper growth and development of the plant. The crop was harvested at its maturity at different level. Yield contributing parameters were recorded from five randomly selected plants from each unit plot. The recorded data on different parameters were statistically analyzed by using MSTAT software to find out the significance of variation resulting from the experimental treatments. Economic evaluation of different potassium levels was done through budgeting and dominant analysis followed by marginal analysis of the cost un dominated treatments. Gross return and variable costs were calculated considering the following rate of costs of the materials: K @ 18 Tk/ kg and dry chilli @ 130 Tk/ kg (According to the market price of the year 2010).

Achievement/Findings:

Experimental data clearly shows significant improvement in yield and yield attributes of chilli with increased potassium application. The weight of single fruit increased with increasing levels of potassium up to potassium level 150 kg/ha and the length of fruit also followed the similar trend. Similar finding was also reported by ISHS Act Horticulture 721 Symposium (2001). Number of fruit per plant was significantly influenced by different levels of potassium. The maximum number of fruits per plant (126.25) was found in the plot receiving potassium level K150 Field trial on chilli showed spectacular increase of green fruit yield and marketable quality improvement of dry chilli with adequate potassium fertilizer. The potassium treatment K150 was shows economically better performance for production of green fruit and improvement of marketable quality of chilli. So, 150 kg /ha of K was considered as economic suitable dose for chilli cultivation at Red Brown Terrace soil (AEZ-28).
