Effect of Different Sowing Condition on Plant Establishment and Yield of Different Mungbean Varieties at High BARInd Tract

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field study was conducted in the farmer’s field of FSRD site, Kadamshahar, Rajshahi during March to June 2006 to find out the suitable sowing condition(s) for establishment of optimum plant stand of mungbean under deficit soil moisture and to maximize the yield of mungbean.Between two sowing conditions, pre-sowing irrigation applied to mungbean plots gave significantly higher plant establishment at harvest stage (40.35 plants/m²) and seed yield (889.22 kg/ha) than that of post sowing irrigation (30.72 plants/m² and (619.39 kg/ha) in post sowing). On the other hand, post sowing irrigation delayed the flowering time (58 days after sowing) as well as field duration (102 days) of the crop compared to pre sowing irrigation 35 DAS and 58 DAS, respectively. Among the mungbean varieties BARImung-6 produced the highest seed yield (856.33 kg/ha) and the lowest was obtained from BARI Mung-2 (698.17 kg/ha). Considering the treatment interaction, pre- sowing irrigation applied to BARI Mung-6 contributed significantly the highest seed yield (1030.67 kg/ha) but post sowing irrigation applied to BARI Mung-2 gave the lowest seed yield (578 kg/ha).

Objectives:

Methodology:

The field study was conducted in the farmer’s field of FSRD site, Kadamshahar, Rajshahi during March to June 2006 to find out the suitable sowing condition(s) for establishment of optimum plant stand of mungbean under deficit soil moisture and to maximize the yield of mungbean. The study comprises of two sowing condition viz., pre sowing irrigation and post sowing irrigation were placed in the main-plot and six-mungbean varieties viz., BARI Mung-2, BARI Mung-3, BARI Mung-5, BARI Mung-6, BU Mung-1 and BU Mung-2 were placed in the sub-plot. It was laid out in split- plot design with three replications. Seeds were sown in the field on 15 March 2006. The experimental results showed that the initial soil sample collected before seed sowing contained 15.15% moisture on oven dry basis. Fertilizer were used 20-40-20 N-P₂O₅-K₂O kg/ha in the experiment plot. Weeding and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. The crop was harvested on 30 June,2006. The yield components were taken from the randomly selected plants in each plot. The grain yield was estimated by the harvesting of whole plot then converted into kg/ha. Data were statistically analyzed and mean differences were adjudged by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT).

Achievement/Findings:

It was found that pre- sowing irrigation applied to BARI Mung-6 is effective for better crop establishment and higher yield of mungbean at High Barind Tract.
