Studies of Different Physico-mechanical Properties of Some Printed Union Fabrics

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

As assessment on the quantity of the jute-cotton union fabrics has been made in terms of their physical properties. The physico-mechanical properties of four union fabrics have been studied and compared. Tensile strength of all samples was not abrupt or fluctuating they showed a consequence like a wave. The values of drape co-efficient was found to be 54.02~56.99 (%). Flexural rigidity and bending modulus of all samples showed better results. Thermal conductivity of all samples are found to be 152~189 mW/m2ºC. The physico-mechanical properties of green and yellow fabrics were similar to those of two other fabrics but green fabrics showed very good performance. The experiment was conducted during the year 2006-2009 at Bangladesh Jute research Institute, Dhaka.

Objectives:

To select proper fabric for specific uses and the optimization of the performance characteristics of jute and blended product will be analyzed by the different properties

Methodology:

Four union fabrics were collected from Pilot Plant Division of Bangladesh Jute Research Institute. The collected fabrics are a kind of chemically treated union fabric having the warp of cotton yarn and weft of jute yarn. Specifications of all samples were determined. Tensile strength was measured to find out the maximum load that a material could support without fracture using fabric tensile strength tester of Good brand & Co. UK. Abrasion resistance is tested using fabric Abrasion tester of Good brand & Co.UK. Shirley Stiffness Tester was used to measure the flexural rigidity and Bending modulus of fabrics. The stiffness or hardness of the fabric has a great impact on its bending length or drape co-efficient. The compactness of the fabric generally depends on the number of ends and picks per unit length and width of the fabrics. Specimens of both warp and weft way were usually tested. To carry out a test the specimen is cut to a definite size with the aid of the template and then both the specimen template are transferred to the platform with the fabric underneath. Both are slowly passed forward and the fabric is continued until the tip of the specimen viewed in the mirror cuts both index lines. Fabric drape is defined as the extent to which a fabric will deform when it is allowed to hang under its own weight. Drape co-efficient were measured using m 213 Fabric Drape Tester, SDL international. Thermal conductivity of textile materials is determined by a home-made simple apparatus, which consists of a step-down transformer, an ammeter, a voltmeter, three copper discs, an electric heater and three thermometers.

Achievement/Findings:

Fabrics have been used for thousands of years and their importance in the world today is greater than ever before. The work was undertaken to study the comparative physical properties such as bending length, tensile strength, drape co-efficient, flexural rigidity and thermal conductivity etc. of some value added union fabrics. Among the four types of union fabrics it is observed that the performance characteristics of green colour fabrics shows better than other three fabrics. These union fabrics may also be produced in any jute mill of Bangladesh with the existing facilities. But research in this connection may be continued for further development of value added union fabrics
