Yield Performance of Black Cumin Under Different Planting Dates

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI. Joydebpur, Gazipur during the period from November 2011 to April 2012 to find out optimum sowing date for obtaining maximum yield of black cumin (var. BARI Kaligira-1). Sowing dates showed great influence on yield of black cumin. The seed yield of November sown black cumin was higher than that of December sowing. Seed yield and dry matter production of black cumin decreased with late sowing due to high temperature at reproductive stage, which decreased growth duration as well as yield of black cumin. The highest seed yield (1443kg/ha) was recorded in November 20 sowing and the lowest (713kg/ha) in December 30 sowing.

Objectives:

To evaluate the sowing date induced temperature variability on phenology, crop duration and yield of black cumin.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the research field of Agronomy Division, BARI, Joydebpur, Gazipur during rabi season of 20011-2012. The soil belongs to the Chhiata series under Agro-Ecological Zone 28. The soil was clay loam and slightly acidic in nature (PH 6.1). Six sowing dates viz. November 10, November 20, November 30, December 10, December 20 and December 30 were used as treatment. The unit plot size was 4m x 3m. The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design with three replications. Seeds of black cumin (var. BARI Kaligira-1) were sown according to treatments. Seed was sown at 30 cm apart line in continuous seeding technique. Fertilizers were applied at the rate of 100-30-45-20 2-1 kg/ha N, P, K, S, Zn and B in the form of urea, triple super phosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MoP), gypsum and boric acid . All fertilizers and 1/3 of urea were applied during final land preparation and the remaining 2/3 urea was applied in two equal splits at 25 and 50 DAS. Appropriate agronomic management practices and proper plant protection measures were taken as and when required during the crop growing period. November 10, 20 and 30 sowings were harvested at 132, 130 and 125 days after sowing (DAS). December 10, 20 and 30 sowing were harvested at 115,110 and 102 DAS. The yield component data were collected from 10 randomly selected plants prior to harvest from each plot. At harvest, the yield data was recorded plot wise and analyzed statistically.
