Mymensingh Sadar upazila is situated in the midle-western part of Mymensingh district. It lies under the AEZ No. 7 (Active Brahmaputra-Jamuna Floodplain) AEZ No. 8 (Young Brahmaputra & Jamuna Floodplain) and AEZ No. 9(Old Brahmaputra Floodplain ). In this upazila major land type recognized was highland comprising 32.7% of total area followed by medium highland comprising 34.3% of the total area. Major textural class also identified was loam covering 53.76% of total area followed by clay loam (16.35%) and clay (5%). Fourteen soil groups were identified namely, Nakla, Sherpur, Sonotala, Tarakandha, Silmondi, Lokdeo, Ghatail, Ghorargaon, Balina, Mohonganj,Melandhah,Dhamrai, Brahmaputra silty alluvium, and Brahmaputra sandy alluvium. In highland and medium highland Sonatola covers major area. According to local agro ecology suitable crop identified were jute(deshi,tosa),Boro rice(morden/local), transplanted aus rice(morden/local), broadcast aus rice(morden/local), transplanted aman rice(morden/local), maize, wheat, cabbage, cauliflower, mustard, brinjal(rabi), mango, jackfruit, coconut. Potato, onion, garlic,mungbean, watermelon, pineapple and banana were identified as moderately suitable. Among fourteen cropping patterns, six major cropping patterns namely Banana/Papaya/Betel leaf; Potato,Cabbage,Cauliflower-Bitter gourd,Snake gourd; Wheat- Fallow-Transplanted Aman (TA); Boro-Fallow-TA; Fallow-Fallow-TA; Boro-Fallow-Fallow were identified. Fertilizer recommendation for suitable crops are given in the guide. This guide can be used for determining flood, drought, landslide, soil erosion, river bank erosion. Demonstration site selection for technology transfer and local level development planning can be done with the help of this guide. Upazila land and soil resources carrying capacity can be estimated which would help in determining food deficit or surplus of the area.
