Yield and Yield Attributes of Garlic as Affected by Planting Techniques and Mulch Materials in Southern Region of Bangladesh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during Rabi season of 2011-12 to find out the suitable combination of mulch material with proper planting technique for higher yield and economic return of garlic (var. BARI Rashun 1). The experiment was laid out in randomized complete block design under factorial arrangement with three replications. Three mulching materials (rice straw, water hyacinth and without mulch) and three planting techniques (normal planting, dibbling and zero tillage) were used as treatment variables. Yield and yield components of garlic were significantly influenced by tillage and planting techniques. Results revealed that rice straw mulch along with zero tillage practice gave consistently the highest bulb yield followed by zero tillage with water hyacinth, dibbling method with rice straw, dibbling method with water hyacinth and normal planting with rice straw. The lowest yield was recorded in no- mulch irrespective of planting techniques. Zero tillage with rice straw mulch showed higher gross return (Tk.270400 /ha), gross margin (Tk.172862/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.77) followed by zero tillage with water hyacinth mulch. Similar trend was also found in 2010-2011. The result revealed that rice straw or water hyacinth mulch accompanied by zero tillage would be economically profitable for garlic cultivation in Barisal region.

Objectives:

Methodology:

A field experiment was conducted at the Regional Agricultural Research Station, Rahmatpur, Barisal during the rabi season of 2011-2012. The soil of the plot was sandy loam in texture having pH 7.5, total N, available P and K were 0.08%, 16.8 µg/g soil and 0.09 meq/100g of soil, respectively. The experiment was consisted of three mulch materials viz. no mulch as control (WM), rice straw (RS) and water hyacinth (WH) and three planting techniques viz. normal planting through conventional tillage (NP), dibbling method (DM), and zero tillage (ZT). The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design under factorial arrangement with 3 replications. Unit plot size was 2m × 2m. The plots were fertilized with cowdung, urea, TSP, MoP and Gypsum @ 5 ton-217 kg-267 Kg-333 Kg-111 Kg per ha. All fertilizers and ½ urea were applied as basal dose and remaining urea applied at 25 DAP as split dose. The cloves of garlic (BARI Rashun 1) were planted on 20 November, 2011 with a sparing of 15 cm x 10 cm. Immediately after planting 5-6 cm thick fresh mulch was added to the plots as per treatments (Kabir et al., 2011). The crop was always kept under careful observation until its harvest on 28 March, 2012. The bulbs were cured for 4 days under shade before storing in an ordinary room (Pruthi, 2006). Ten plants were selected at random from each plot for the collection of data. Data related to yield and yield contributing characters were collected and analyzed statistically and the mean differences were tested by DMRT (Gomez and Gomez, 1984).

Achievement/Findings:

The result revealed that rice straw or water hyacinth mulch accompanied by zero tillage would be economically profitable for garlic cultivation in Barisal region.
