Optimizing Plant Nutrients for Ginger Cultivation

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The field experiment was conducted during 2009-2010 at Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra to investigate the effect of nitrogen (0, 50, 100 and 150 kg/ha), phosphorus (0, 20, 40 and 60 kg/ha), potassium (0, 40, 80 and 120 kg/ha) and sulphur (0, 15 and 30 kg/ha) on maximizing productivity of ginger. Results showed that N150P60K80S15 gave the highest yield (18.90t/ha) of ginger.The highest number of tillers per plant (17.23) was obtained in the nutrient treatment of N150P40K80S30 followed by others treatments. The highest yield of ginger (18.9t/ha) was obtained in treatment N150P60K80S15. Similar results was obtained by Singh and Neopany, 1993; Gowda et al., 1998. Among the fertilizers treatments it was observed that certain level of fertilizer elements had significantly influenced growth and yield parameters of ginger, beyond which it decreased and suggested that ginger dose not prefer too low and too high amount of nutrients. Moreover, application of macronutrients undoubtedly increased the yield indicating that soil was originally deficient in nutrients that is why yield responses was high.

Objectives:

To study the effect of different fertilizers elements on the production of quality ginger.

Methodology:

Field experiment was conducted during 2009-2010 on high yielding variety of ginger BARI Ada-1, using different fertilizers at Spices Research Centre, Shibgonj, Bogra. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications consisted of five treatments: 1. N0P40K80S15, 2. N50P40K80S15, 3. N100P40K80S15. 4. N150P40K80S15, 5. N200P40K80S15, 6. N150P0K80S15,, 7.N150P20K80S15, 8.N150P60K80S15, 9.N150P40K0S15, 10. N150P40K40S15 11. N150P40K120S15 12. N150P40K80S0, 13. N150P40K80S30, 14. N0P0K0S0 Rhizome of BARI Ada-1 was planted on 24 April 2009 and harvested on 11 February 2010. All other agronomical practices were done according to recommendation for ginger production. The data obtained were statistically analyzed by MSTATC computer software program (Bricker, 1991).

Achievement/Findings:
