Determination of Wettability of Jute and Other Textile Fabrics.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

BJRI is now producing a lot of fabrics of different variations and construction. Some of these products have been prepared for the purpose of using them as wearing apparels. So, these products need to be tested for wettability as it may be helpful in determining their comfort properties and hence acceptability in the market. Studies were made for different types of fabric such as jute, treated jute, jute flax(union), jute flax(blended), jute -cotton(union), jute-polyester etc. Treated jute fabrics (100%) absorb water very quickly than untreated one. Jute fabrics (100%) treated with dry cross linking method absorb water in short time than treated with Moist Cross linking method. Bleached and dyed jute cotton union (60:40) fabrics have lower time of absorption than mercerization, bleached and dyed jute cotton union fabrics (60:40). As regard comfort, 100% cotton drill fabrics has the lowest time of absorption which make it most suitable among all other cotton fabrics. Polyester (100%) in respect of water has highest time of absorption among all other different types of fabrics. It is also observed that jute flax union fabric was more wettable than jute flax blended fabrics.

Objectives:

Development, fabrication and modification of machinery and instruments for processing jute and other textile materials.

Methodology:

Five different fabrics collected from BJRI and eight sample were collected from local market. Wettability in terms of time in seconds absorption of water purchased from the local market according to British standard Method by the wettability tester. Scouring, de-sizing, bleaching, double stage bleaching, wollenization, Moist and Dry cross linking treatment of different fabrics were done on the fabrics. Samples of different fabrics were prepared as suitable size of 200 x 200 square mm for clamping with the embroidery frame of diameter 150 mm. Then the sample were kept in standard atmosphere of relative humidity of 65±2 and temperature of 20 degree C ± 2 degree C for at least 24 hours. Absorption was measured by placing the sample of fabrics on a horizontal embroidery frame and dropping one drop of distilled water from a burette of height of 0.95 cm on to the fabrics and measured the time in second using stopwatch.

Achievement/Findings:

It was observed from the results that jute fabrics dyed after de-sizing, scouring and double stage bleached jute fabrics acquired high water absorbing capacity. Other jute and cotton fabrics took more time for absorption than other sample. Tossa fabrics were found to have satisfactory time of absorption which was compared to those of cotton fabrics and CBC jute fabrics. The bleached one was found more absorbing capacity than that of the untreated one. Of the three different cotton samples tested the poplin sample was found to have very low water absorbing capacity which was very close to that of CBC. It was found that jute cotton union fabrics had low water absorbing capacity which was comparable to those of CBC and poplin
