A standard procedure for the screening of lignolytic fungi has been established. Conditions for biopulping of green jute plant with 5 strain has been established. Chemical pulping were conducted in soda AQ process with pretreated jute plants.Physical properties of hand sheet prepared from pulp of treated jute plants were measured

Production and application of enzymatic process for biopulping jute / kenaf .

Methodology:

In order to select suitable micro - organisms for biopulping a standard screening procedure has been established through the study of colour changes of a sulphonated polymeric dye, the poly - R. Out of the 15 isolated and collected fungal strains only the 5 strains showed lignolytic activities. for carrying out the biopulping jute plants were cut into small pieces ( 1 - 1.5 inch length) . The jute cut pieces of jute plant were taken in polythene bags with 60% added moisture . The poly bags with jute plant were autoclaved at 120 degree centigrade for 15 minutes . Each poly bag was inoculated separately with 5 fungal strains. Control experiment was carried out without the fungus under the same conditions. After 14 days of incubation the plants were digested for pulping using soda AQ chemical process at BCSIR.

Achievement/Findings:

The study was to use jute plant for pulp and paper through biopulping and to improve the pulp properties.All fungal treated jute pulp have reduced kapper number than untreated one. Similarly the physical properties of hand sheet prepared with pulp from pretreated jute plants have improved burst index, tear indices and tensile strength
