Influence of Planting Materials and Npk on the Seed Yield of Turmeric

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

An experiment was carried out at Regional Spices Research Centre, Magura during April, 2010 to January, 2011 to select the suitable planting material and determine the application rate of NPK for higher yield of turmeric. The highest yield 39.23 t/ha were obtained when primary finger used as a planting material. On the other hand, application of N140P40K120 kg/ha performed well yielding 46.17 t/ha. In case of combined effect, the highest yield (50.90 t/ha) was recorded from the interaction of primary finger with N140P40K120 kg/ha. But benefit cost ratio was found the highest (10.28) in the treatment combination of half cut mother rhizome with application of NPK @ 140-40-120 kg/ha.

Objectives:

To develop a package for turmeric production with special reference to planting materials and NPK fertilization

Methodology:

An experiment was carried out at Regional Spices Research Centre, Magura during April, 2010 to January, 2011. The experiment was laid out in Randomized Block Design with three replications. The treatments were conducted of three planting materials viz., whole mother rhizome, half cut mother rhizome and primary finger and application of NPK @ N0P0K0, N115P20K90, N140P40K120 and N165P60K150 kg/ha, respectively. The unit plot size 4.8 x 3.0 m having the spacing 60 x 30 cm. BARI Holud-3 was used as test crop. The crop was planted on 5 April, 2010. All necessary measures were taken during the season. The crop was harvested at optimum maturity on 8 January, 2011. Data on different to raise the crop yield components and yield of turmeric was recorded and analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

The physiological and yield data showed significant variations in all parameters . All the studied parameters performed well when primary finger was used as a planting material. On the contrary, application of NPK @ N140P40K120 kg/ha maximized the yield potentiality of turmeric. In case of combined effect, the highest yield (50.90 t/ha) was recorded in the treatment combination of primary finger with application of NPK @ N140P40K120 kg/ha. The highest gross return (Tk.1360500/-) net return (Tk.1228104/-) and benefit cost ratio (10.28) were found in the treatment combination of half cut mother rhizome with application of fertilizer @ N140P40K120 kg/ha. The highest production cost (Tk.1700034/-) was recorded in the treatment combination of whole mother rhizome with application of fertilizers @ N165P60K150 kg/ha. Use of half cut mother rhizome as a planting material along with application of fertilizer @ N140P40K120 kg/ha are effective combinations for successful cultivation of turmeric in the Magura region of Bangladesh.
