Promotion of Improved Cropping Pattern Packages

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The performance of tested patterns showed that improved management practices gave about 23-17% more grain yield than farmers’ management practices. Pattern, BRRI dhan49-BRRI dhan29-Fallow gave the highest grain yield (10.09 t/ha) which was about 23% higher than the farmers’ management practices (8.19 t/ha). Result of the study also indicated that the total productivity of a pattern could be increased by adopting improved and recommended cultural and management practices.

Objectives:

To increase the system productivity and income of the farmers through introduction of improved cropping patterns

Methodology:

BRRI dhan49-BRRI dhan29-Fallow and BRRI dhan46-BRRI dhan29-Fallow with improved management (IM) and farmers management (FM) practices were evaluated at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia during 2009-10. As test materials BRRI dhan49 and BRRI dhan46 in T. Aman season and BRRI dhan29 in Boro season were used in the study.

Boro-Fallow-T.Aman, Boro-Fallow-Fallow and Boro-Fallow-Local T. Aman are the major cropping patterns at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia. In T. Aman season farmers usually grow Horafdi, Loita, Telosh, Pajam, Kaliaburi etc. as local varieties and BR11, BRRI dhan30 and BRRI dhan40 as high yielding varieties. In Boro season, the most popular variety is BRRI dhan29. Other HYVs practiced by the farmers are BRRI dhan28, BR1, BR14 and BR16. But the total productivity of these patterns is not satisfactory due to poor and improper management practices. On the other hand, farmers of this study area also grow sugarcane as a single crop under rainfed condition. Under this situation sugarcane is planted during March-April with local varieties. But the yield performance of these local varieties is low. Benchmark survey conducted at FSR&D site Moison, Kapasia and the data revel that there is a wide scope to introduce one or more short duration Rabi crops as intercrop with sugarcane to increase the system productivity.
