Development of New Jute Products to Improve Market Potentiality

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Crude enzyme preparation having xylanase activity were extracted by solid state fermentation on wheat bran medium with P. chrysosporium. Enzyme activity was measured following the standard procedure. Bleaching activity of enzyme preparation on unbleached jute soda AQ pulp was carried out.Brightness and Kappa number of the enzyme treated pulps were measured.

Objectives:

Production and application of enzymes for biobleaching process on jute fabrics and jute pulp

Methodology:

The fungi S. pulverulenntum and P. chrysosporium were used for enzyme production on wheat bran by solid state fermentation. Enzyme assay was carried out following the standard procedure.Unbleached 100g of soda AQ jute pulp collected from BCSIR laboratory.It was placed in 1 litre of buffer and enzyme solution so that the pulp consistency would be 10%. One litre of enzyme & buffer solution should contain 200 IU of xylanase so that enzyme application rate was 2 IU / gm of pulp, pH was adjusted to 5 with dilute H₂SO₄. The pulp immersed in the enzyme buffer solution was kept at constant temperature of 50 degree centregrate for two hours with occasional strring. The brightness was measured with photo volt reflecto- meter using green filter. Kappa number was measured before and after enzyme treatment of jute pulp.

Achievement/Findings:

Xylanase enzymes modify the xylan portion of hemicellulose in such way as to increase efficiency of the subsequent bleaching stages . Xylanase preparation of fungus P. chrysosporium has shown bleaching effect on soda AQ jute pulp. Xylanase treatment has reduced the Kappa number of jute pulp indicating the presence of ligninase activity in the enzyme preparations.The effect of venzyme treatet on pulp brightness and delignification could fully be quatified after control and xylanase treated pulps were subjected to subsequent standard bleaching sequence. Reduction of bleaching chemicals with enzyme treated jute pulp would be quantified after carrying out the subsequent chemical bleaching sequences.
