The experiment was conducted at Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra during 2010-2011 to scientifically validate the farmers days old practice of growing ginger in shade. In the experiment the treatments (tree garden) were dispersed but five replication of each treatment were compact. Among the different types of shade used for ginger and degrees of shade imparted for ginger growing were significantly higher yield (14-15.1 t ha-1) of ginger was obtained from its cultivation under trailees crop, followed by in Daincha shade. The higher yield of ginger was attributed by significantly higher plant height, tillers, leaves, leaf area, H2O and CO2 use, PAR on leaf surface, transpiration and photosynthesis rate in the above shade compared to sunny or studied other permanent tree crop shade. In correlation study there also observed positive correlation between studied yield attributing parameters and phenomena of ginger under traliees and Daincha shade except for sub-stomatal CO2 and stomatal conductance. The reason might be due to intermittent nature of light and shade under tarilees along with getting better crop management like weeding, irrigation, fertilization in mixed cropping with creeper vegetables or less sun light interrupted by Daincha and addition of nitrogen and bio-mass from Daincha.

To see the performance of ginger evaluated under different light intensities received from shade plants compare to open sunny place.

The study was conducted at Spices Research Center, BARI, Bogra during May, 2010- February 2011, growing season. BARI Adda-1 was the test crop grown under the shade of six different plants viz. Bayleaf, mango, jackfruit, neem tree, Daincha and creeper vegetable including open sunny place (control). Different types of shade were chosen to cover a broad range of canopy structure for proper representation of the studied objective. In each shade type five different spots were randomly selected and tagged as replication. Again in each spot five plants were tagged as a sample plant for data collection. The land under shade plants were prepared by spading/power tiller as and where possible, and was fertilized at the rate of 5 ton cow dung, 267-205-3-110 kg TSP, MP, Zinc and gypsum per hectare at the time of final land preparation on 29 April 2010. Ginger was planted at a spacing of 50cm × 25cm on 7 May, 2010.Eight lines of summer onion were planted between two rows of ginger at a spacing of 10 cmx 10cm. Similarly, four lines of chilli seedlings were planted with plant to plant spacing 50 cm. Yard long bean were planted at a spacing of 100 cm. Ginger, chilli and summer onion was planted at the same time with ginger, while yard long bean, snake gourd were planted on 20 April 2010 in pit. Country bean and bottle gourd were planted on 10 August 2010 in pit. Different agronomic traits like plant height, tiller/clump, leaves/clump, yield were measured by simple counting and on different physiological traits like use of H2O, CO2 by plants, transpiration rate, PAR incident on leaf surface (ginger) and photosynthetic rate were measured from 12.00 noon to 14.00 pm using a Portable photosynthesis system (model. Man- LCI. ADC Bio-Scientific LTD, UK).

The agronomic and physiological traits under study revealed that ginger attained higher plant height (above 270cm) under trailees, bayleaf and neem tree shade; higher number of tillers (18) and leaves (above 200)/clump, leaf area (above 46cm2) in creeper shade, more H2O (12m Bar) and CO2 (above 19 Vpm) use, more PAR (above 650μmol-1m-2s-1) on leaf surface, transpiration (above 2.5mmol-1m-2s-1) and photosynthesis (above 5.2μmol-1m-2s-1) rate was recorded under trailees and Daincha shade; and in sunny place. There by, ginger might have the capacity to respond positively to lower C02 level and higher photosynthetic efficiency at low light intensity. The physio-chemical phenomina may lies in, that at a given leaf nitrogen per mass greater SLA optimizes light capture at the expense of maximum carboxylation rate (Evan 1989). Intermittent shading and light in trailees of creeper crops can give higher yield of intercrop ginger compared to any other shade or in open sunny place may be because of better utilization of light and applied resources (fertilizer and water, biomass) and management (weeding) in mixed intercrop culture. Similar result was also observed during 2009-2010 trial year. From this two years trial it may be worthy to conclude that while selecting a variety of ginger, four traits like plant height, tillers and leaves/clump, leaf area should be given priority for getting higher yield.
