Cotton Research, Training and Seed Multiplication Farm, Sreepur, Gazipur

The influence of removal of monopodia and plant density on seed cotton yield and yield contributing characters were evaluated at Sreepur farm in 2009-2010 . Effects of removal of monopodia and plant density and those interaction effect were found significant on cotton yield and yield contributing characters. The highest seed cotton yield (2.28 t/ha) was obtained from removal of monopodia at flowering stage with 37037 plants/ha that also gave the highest BCR (3.14).

The experiment was carried out at Sreepur farm in 2009-2013. Three levels of monopodia viz. control, continuous removal and removal at flowering stage and four levels of plant population viz. 2469, 27777, 31746 and 37037 were tested in two factors RCBD with 3 replications.The unit plot size was 6.3 m × 5.4 m. Two or three seeds were sowing per hill. Though, after final thinning one seedling/hill was allowed to grow. Intercultural operations such as weeding, thinning, gap-filling, earthling-up, irrigation, insects and pest management were done in all plots uniformly. Cotton yield contributing characters such as plant height, number of vegetative and fruiting branches/plant, number of effective boll/plant, single boll weight were recorded from 10 randomly selected plants and seed cotton yield was recorded from each plot. The result suggested that removal of monopodia at flowering stage with the highest population (37037 plant/ha) gave the highest seed cotton yield (2.28 t/ha). Removal of monopodia decreased dry matter accumulation that was compensated by higher plant population. Gross margin and BCR were the highest in removal of monopodia at flowering stage with 37037 plant/ha. Hence, removal of monopodia at flowering stage with 37037 plant/ha ( 60 cm × 45 cm spacing) should be practiced for maximum yield of cotton.
