Demonstration of Poultry Manure as a Source of Phosphorus Fertilizer

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

In rice production, phosphorus fertilizer plays a vital role. It increases the tiller numbers, improves the root systems and timely flowering of rice plant. Poultry manure is the bi-product of poultry farm. In last decade, poultry farm grew rapidly in Bangladesh. Now there are poultry farms in many villages. Villagers don't know the proper use of poultry manure. he study was conducted at Kapasia, Gazipur with the objective to demonstrate poultry manure as a source of phosphorus for rice. The result indicates that in T. Aman season, all fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure applied plot gave higher grain yield than the all fertilizers (–P) applied plot.. On the other hand, all fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure applied plot gave higher grain yield than the all fertilizers (–P) applied plot in Boro season. Poultry manure is quickly mineralized material. It contains 2.04% N and 1.03% P. In combination of all chemical fertilizers gave highest yield followed by all fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure and the lowest yield was observed in all fertilizers (–P) both in T. Aman and Boro season.

Objectives:

To demonstrate poultry manure as a source of phosphorus for rice

Methodology:

Poultry manure contains 29% phosphorus (P). So, it is the good source of phosphorus fertilizer. It can be used as alternate source of phosphorus fertilizer. Poultry manure is also good source of organic fertilizer. It increases the soil organic matter. In 2008, price of phosphorus fertilizer was so high. For those reason, it is executed this type of demonstration of poultry manure as alternate source of phosphorus fertilizer which was usually wasted for farmer's knowledge gap. A demonstration trial for poultry manure as alternate source of phosphorus fertilizer was carried out at BRRI technology site, Kapasia, Gazipur during T. Aman and Boro season 2009-10. BRRI dhan46 during T. Aman and BRRI dhan29 during Boro 2009-10 were used in this study. Six dispersed farmers field were used to conduct this experiment. The treatments were T₁= All fertilizers, T₂= All fertilizers (–P) and T₃= All fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure.

Achievement/Findings:

In T. Aman season, all fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure applied plot gave 0.55 t/ha higher grain yield than the all fertilizers (–P) applied plot which was 0.26 t/ha lower than the all fertilizer applied plot. On the other hand, all fertilizers (–P) + poultry manure applied plot gave 1.10 t/ha higher grain yield than the all fertilizers (–P) applied plot which was 0.40 t/ha lower than the all fertilizers applied plot in Boro season.
