The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Centre, Shibjonj, Bogra during rabi season, 2010-11 to find out optimum planting time and plant spacing for maximizing seed yield of onion. The land was medium high and the soil was clay loam in texture. The experiment was laid out in a split-plot design with three replications. Four planting time viz., 30 October, 10 November, 20 November and 30 November were assigned to the main-plot and five plant spacing viz., 20cm x 20cm, 20cm x 15cm, 20cm x 10cm, 15cm x 15cm and 15cm x 10cm were assigned to the sub-plot to achieve the objectives. The highest seed yield (662.7kg/ha) was obtained from crops planted on 10 November which was identical to 20 November (645.7 kg/ha) but differed significantly from other treatments. The highest seed yield (687.8kg/ha) was recorded from 20cm?15cm spacing which differed significantly from other treatments. The highest seed yield (771.3 kg/ha) was recorded from crops grown on 10 November along with 20cmx15cm spacing which was identical 20 November along with 20cm?15cm spacing but differed significantly from other treatments. The lowest seed yield was obtained when the crops was grown on 30 November along with 15cmx10cm spacing.

To find out optimum planting time and plant spacing for maximizing seed yield of onion.

The unit plot size was 3m x 2.4m. The cv. BARI Piaz 4 was used as test crop. The crop was planted as per date and spacing mentioned in the treatments. In addition to 5 t/ha of cow dung, the crop was fertilized with N145P83K84S20Bo1.5 kg/ha. The entire amount of cow dung P, S, Bo, ¼ N and ? K was applied during land preparation. The rest N was applied in three equal splits at 40, and 60 and 80 days after planting (DAP). To control thrips `Gain' @ 0.25ml/L of water was sprayed at 35, 45, 55 and 65 DAP. Similarly, to control purple blotch disease, the crop was sprayed with `Rovral' @ 2g/L of water at 40, 50, 60 and 70 DAP. They spray remained stopped after initiation of first blooming. The crop was harvested through 28 May-8 April, 2011 depending on maturity. Data on plant height, scape height, number of umbel per plant, diameter of umbel, number of flowers per umbel, number of flowers setting seeds per umbel, percent seed settings, 1000-seed weight, seed yield and percent seed germination were recorded.

Planting time had marked influence on the scape height of onion. The tallest scape (84.95 cm) was recorded from crops planted on 10 November which was identical to 30 October (84.93cm) and 20 November (82.99 cm) planting. The shortest scape was measured from 30 November planting. Like plant height, delay planting beyond 10 November also reduced the scape height of onion. Plant spacing had marked influence on the plant population per unit area. The highest population (54/m2) was counted from 15cmx10cm spacing which differed significantly from other treatment. The interaction effect of planting time and spacing exerted significant effect on the seed yield of onion. The highest seed yield (771.3 kg/ha) was recorded from crops grown on 10 November along with 20cmx15cm spacing which was identical to 20 November along with 20cmx15cm spacing but differed significantly from other treatments. The lowest seed yield was obtained when the crops was grown on 30 November along with 15cmx10cm spacing. The result indicated that irrespective of planting time, the closer spacing reduced the seed yield. Similarly, irrespective of spacing, delay planting beyond 20 November reduced seed yield. In review of the result of the study, it can be concluded that from agronomic and economic point of view crops grown on 10 or 20 November along with 20cmx15cm spacing might be the best alternative for maximizing seed yield of onion.
