Evaluation of Different Methods of Summer Onion Seed Production

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Centre, Bogra during February 2010 to April 2011. The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design with four treatments and three replications. Different methods had significant influence on no. of stalks/plant, 1000 seed weight and seed yield/ha. The highest seed yield (352.42 kg/ha) was found from bulb to seed method.

Objectives:

To find out the appropriate methods for summer onion seed production.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted at the Spices Research Centre, Bogra during February 2010 to April 2011 to identify the appropriate and easy method(s) for summer onion seed production. The variety BARI Piaz-5 was used in the experiment. The following production methods comprised the treatment combinations. (i) Seed to seed method: Seeds were sown in the seed bed on 22 September, 2010 for raising seedlings. Then 45 days old seedlings were transplanted in the field on 7 November, 2010 and allowed the crop to grow till seed maturity. (ii) Seed to bulb to seed method: (iii) Seed to bulblets to bulb to seed: (iv) Seed to bulblets to seed: The experiment was laid out in a randomized complete block design; each treatment being replicated three times. The unit plot size was 4m X 1.25m and plant spacing was 25cm X 20 cm. In case of bulblet production, the land was fertilized with only cow dung @ 10 ton/ha and seeds were sown following broadcast method. For seed production purpose, the land was manured and fertilized with cow dung @ 5 t/ha and Urea, TSP, MOP, Gypsum and Boron @ 250,260,150,110 and 3 kg/ha. Weeding, irrigation and other intercultural operations were done as and when required. Alternate spraying of Rubral and Ridomil gold fungicides (2g/L water) was done at 7-10 days interval for controlling purple blotch and stemphylum blight. Insecticide Admire (0.5 ml/L water) was also sprayed at 10 days interval for controlling thrips. Seeds were harvested within 15-20 April 2011, dried and cleaned. Seed yield and yield contributing data were recorded and statistically analyzed.

Achievement/Findings:

Different methods of seed production had marked influence on the seed yield of summer onion. Seed yield varied from 72.33-352.42 kg/ha. The highest seed yield (352.42 kg/ha) was obtained with bulb to seed method. Seed to seed method gave the lowest yield (72.33 kg/ha). From method to method, trend of seed yield was in the order: Bulb to seed > Seed to bulblet to seed > Seed to bulblet to bulb to seed> Seed to seed. Despite origin of bulb, whether it was from seed or bulblet, bulb to seed always gave higher seed yield. However, bulbs those received longer storage time performed better. Among the methods, bulb to seed method showed better performance with respect to yield and yield contributing characters followed by Seed-bulblets seed method. However, it is 2nd year result. It needs to be repeated further to verify the results.
