Multilocation Testing of BRRI Dhan46–brridhan29–fallow Cropping Pattern in Different Locations of Bangladseh

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The recommended patterns gave 14-20% higher grain yield and gross margin over existing farmers’ patterns. The highest yield of 10.60 t/ha and gross margin of Tk. 1,59,000/ha from recommended cropping pattern was obtained in B. Baria followed by Kurigram where the pattern yield and gross margin were 10.08 t/ha and Tk. 1,51,200/ha, respectively.

Objectives:

To increase productivity of existing system through introduction of BRRI developed high yielding varieties throughout the country

Methodology:

Multilocation trial of BRRI dhan46–BRRI dhan29–Fallow cropping pattern in medium highland phase II was undertaken at three Upazilas of Kurigram, Gaibandha and B. Baria districts. Block demonstration was done at five bigha land of five farmers at each Upazila. Yield and gross margins of the recommended and farmers patterns have been observed.

Achievement/Findings:

In medium highland phase II, farmers usually grow local T. Aman varieties after recession of floodwater in T. Aman–Boro-Fallow cropping pattern. But the yield of T. Aman is very low due to use of local varieties or delayed planting in September and the total system productivity become very low. To address the situation, BRRI has developed photosensitive HYVs like, BR22, BR23 and BRRI dhan46. Recently developed BRRI dhan46 could be transplanted safely up to 25 September with at least 1t/ha yield advantage over local varieties. In Boro season, the performance of BRRI dhan29 in the said pattern is very encouraging. The recommended patterns gave 14-20% higher grain yield and gross margin over existing farmers’ patterns.
