Suitability Assessment of Maize Growing Areas of Bangladesh in Respect of Varietal and Seasonal Variation Depending on Aez and Related Database Using GIS Tools

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The present study is aimed at using GIS as a tool for spatial data analysis to assess crop suitability classification for maize in different AEZ of Bangladesh in rice-wheat cropping system during 2003-2004. Parameters from AEZ soil association database have been ranked, converted to grid format and spatial model is constructed for potential maize cultivable area estimation. Three suitability classes are categorized as 1 for suitable, 2 for moderately suitable and 3 for not suitable. The model is constructed for overlay operation using the Arc View interactive Model Builder. After the overlay analysis, suitability map for maize cultivation is produced. In Bangladesh with limited land resources having declining productivity, it is important to characterize each unit of land for best utilization through efficient land use planning. The output maps will be used as a guideline for technology transfer and expansion of this valuable crop.

Objectives:

To evaluate the effect of seasonal and varietal difference of the total area of maize cultivation
To asses usability of GIS tools for analysis of soil, hydraulic and climatic data for suitability study of maize.

Methodology:

Data source Combined soil association base map is used as the physiographic data source for the study. AEZ database, which is derived from the FAO land resource appraisal forming AEZ database of BARC is used as the digital data source. Climatic surface from Bangladesh Country Almanac database is transformed to existing BTM projection and used in the study for reviewing with edaphic factors. GIS application software Bangladesh Country Almanac (BCA) a user friendly GIS tool with spatial analysis software AWheare Act with essential spatial and attribute data is used as primary what if analysis tool of the process. Model Builder process wizards and diagramming tools of ArcView 3.2 Spatial Analyst is used to generate suitability map. This Interactive tool is used to construct flow diagrams that visually represent processes of geographic analysis. The interactive Models was constructed, saved, and rerun using different input data and function parameters to get expected output for different alternative scenarios. Microsoft Access is used as relational database management software. Microsoft Excel is for spreadsheet calculation. GIS Lab used Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute, Soil Science computer lab is used as the primary database processing with BCA Tool and BRRI GIS lab is used for the final suitability analysis with ArcView. Procedures followed Combined soil association map having 3976 individual map units (soil association) each with unique physiographic characteristics is used as base map for the study.

Achievement/Findings:

Three different zones are calculated and coloured from derived suitability map . The model predicts areas coloured with deep green are suitable for maize cultivation where as areas coloured with light green are moderately suitable and areas coloured with yellow colour are not suitable or restricted for maize cultivation. It is observed from the map that wide area are suitable for maize cultivation where maize is not cultivated. Areas not suitable for maize cultivation are also understood from the suitability map. In Bangladesh with limited land resources having declining productivity it is important to characterize each unit of land for best utilization through efficient land use planning. Maize being a profitable crop can play an important role for the sustainable food and feed production. GIS can be used as a powerful tool for decision making and introducing this important cereal crop in different scenario when it is used wisely and efficiently
