Field experiments were conducted at Ishurdi (Pabna), Jamalpur and Jessore of the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute farm during kharif-I season of 2012 to find out seeding ratio of mungbean population to be intercropped with sesame for getting higher economic return and utilize the land efficiency. Seven treatment viz., T1= One row (100%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) + mungbean (100% broadcast), T2= One row of sesame (90%) in between two rows (100%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm), T3= One row of sesame (30%) after two rows (70%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10cm), T4 = Two rows of mungbean (60%) alternated with two rows (40%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm), T5= One row of mungbean (50%) alternated with one row (50%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm), T6= Sole crop (100%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) and T7= Sole crop (100%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) were included in the study. The trial was set up in randomized complete block design with three replications. The result showed that yield and yield attributes of mungbean and sesame were significantly affected due to intercropping system. Sole crop of mungbean and sesame produced significantly highest yield. The highest sesame equivalent yield (2284 kg/ha) and land equivalent ratio (1.50) was obtained from one row (90%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) in between two rows (100%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) at Jamalpur. On the contrary, planting configuration of one row (100%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) + mungbean (100% broadcast) gave highest sesame equivalent yield (2424 kg/ha) and land equivalent ratio (1.46) at Jessore , Averaged over locations, the highest gross return (Tk.100526/ha) gross margin (Tk. 57335/ha) and benefit cost ratio (2.51)were recorded from one row (90%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) in between two rows (100%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) followed by one row (100%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) + mungbean (100% broadcast) indicated the profitability of intercropping.

To find out seeding ratio of mungbean population to be intercropped with sesame for higher yield, economic return

T1= One row sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) + mungbean broadcast (100% sesame + 100% mungbean), T2= One row of sesame in between two rows of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) (100% mungbean + 90% sesame), T3= One row of sesame after two rows of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) (70% mungbean + 30 % sesame), T4= Two rows of mungbean alternated with two rows of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) (60% mungbean + 40 % sesame), T5= One row mungbean alternated with one row of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) (50% mungbean + 50% sesame), T6= Sole crop (100%) of mungbean (30 cm x 10 cm) and T7= Sole crop(100%) of sesame (30 cm x 10 cm) were used in the study in all the locations. The experiment was carried out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Unit plot size was 3m x 5m. For sole mungbean and interesspped system, fertilizers @ 28-18-20-20-1 kg N, P K, S and B/ha and for sole sesame 52-30-25-19-2 Kg N, P, K, S and B/ha were applied, respectively. For sole mungbean and intercropped system all nutrients and for sole sesame half N and all other nutrients were applied at the time of final land preparation. Seeds of sesame (var. BARI Til-4) and mungbean (var. BARI Mung -6) were sown on 26 March at Ishurdi, 14 March at Jamalpur and 14 March 2012 at Jessore. Remaining N for sole sesame was applied as top dressed at 30 days after sowing (DAS). Intercultural operations such as thinning, weeding, mulching, plant protection measures etc. were done as and when required. Five plants were selected randomly for yield attributes of mungbean and sesame. Yield data was also collected. All the collected data were analysed statistically and means were compared by LSD test. Sesame equivalent yield and land equivalent ratio were calculated .
