Maturity Determination of Yard Long Bean

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A study was undertaken for determination of commercial maturity of yard long bean during 16 April to 15 August 2011 at Horticulture Research Centre of Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute. The pods were harvested on 6, 8, 10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 days after anthesis. Among the seven development stages, the best commercial maturity was found to attain 12 days after anthesis. At this stage, the pods of BARI Yard long bean-1 attained a size of 41.07cm length, 5.94 mm diameter and 23.24 mm circumference having 12.31g weight. The number of quality pods (29.33) and yield (14.06 t/ha) were found to obtain high in this stage. The subjective parameters of commercial maturity of yard long bean pods were selected as slight to moderate bulge out of seed having tender and shiny green skin retain sufficient tenderness.

Objectives:

To determine appropriate commercial maturity of yard long bean.

Methodology:

The experiment was conducted in vegetable research farm and postharvest laboratory of Horticultural Research Centre, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) during May to August 2011. The variety BARI yard long bean-1 was selected for determining the commercial maturity in this study. The experiment was laid out in RCBD replicated thrice. The flowers were tagged at morning on the day of anthesis. The developed fruits were harvested after 6, 8,10, 12, 14, 16 and 18 days after anthesis, specified as maturity stages 6 DAA, 8 DAA, 10 DAA, 12 DAA,14 DAA, 16 DAA and 18 DAA. The physiological loss in weight (%) and marketability were evaluated for every day up to the last day of storage life. The quality criteria such as pod fibrousness and pod protrudence were evaluated with the assissted of predtermined hedonic score by forming a panel of judges consisting of 5 members.

Achievement/Findings:

BARI yard long bean-1 was found suitable to become commercially mature when the pods protuberated slightly or moderately by bulging out of seeds, remain shiny green, acceptably soft and tender. While the seeds taking out from these pods, a pink tinge was found to still confined round the hilum but not spreading throughout the seed coat. At this stage, BARI Yard long bean-1 got a size of 41.07 cm length, 5.94 cm diameter and 23.24 cm circumference having 12.31g weight. Considering quality preference like acceptable softness and less fibrousness, rate of weight losses during storage, and storage life couple with pod size, number of pods per plant and yield, the commercially matured yard long bean may be obtained from 10 to 14 days after anthesis with recommended fertilizer application, cultural practices, and growing season during summer.
