Semi Pilot Scale Production of Sanitary Napkins and to Study Its Economic and Market Feasibility

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Sanitary Napkins have been produced using chemically treated jute caddies as absorbent cotton substitute. Better results for thermal conductivity, absorbency, static charge growth and water holding capacity obtained from the Napkins made by blending 90% absorbent cotton substitute with 10% standard absorbent cotton. Higher thermal conductivity and medium value of absorbency, water holding capacity and static charge growth were found to be obtained from the napkins made by blending 50% chemically treated jute caddies with 50% standard absorbent cotton. But the products were found to be less economically feasible. Due to scouring, hot caustic treatment and bleaching at 85 degree C to 90 degree C of temperature, the sample became most hygienic and no mycotoxin and allergy producing fungi was found to be grown in Dermatological test. Haeshfeelness were eliminated by using the outer covering of soft hygienic type of bandage cloth. All the works were performed in 295 degree K ± 2 degree K of room temperature and 65% ± 2% of relative humidity

Objectives:

1. To industrialize and diversify the use of low quality jute and jute wastes for manufacturing cost effective products.

2. To produce the sanitary napkin from chemically treated jute waste and to study its economic and market feasibility.

Methodology:

Spinning caddies was collected from Abdul Malek Jute Mills and all chemical treatments were done in the wet processing department of pilot Plant and Processing Division. Scouring was done by using Na₂CO₃ and normal bleaching was done at a temperature of 80 degree C to 90 degree C and finally washed by cold water and was dried in the sunlight. Then the sample was carded by carding machine from outside. Thus blended sample of 90% treated caddies with 10% standard absorbent cotton, 80% treated caddies with 20% standard absorbent cotton, 70% treated caddies with 30% standard absorbent cotton, 60% treated caddies with 40% standard absorbent cotton, 50% treated caddies with 50% standard absorbent cotton and 100% chemically modified spinning caddies alone was prepared. Thereafter, about 50 bags of baby napkins were produced and thermal conductivity, water absorption capacity and static charge were measured after optimizing. Finally, their economic and market feasibility were studied.

Achievement/Findings:

80-90 pieces napkins can produce from 1 Kg treated sample. Sanitary napkins were successfully finished in semi-pilot scale level and their hygroscopicity, hygienic properties, thermal conductivity, water absorption capacity and static charge were analyzed. Finally, economic and market feasibilities were successfully completed.
