Study the Agronomic Practice of Weeding and Thinning on Fibre Yield and Economic Importance of White Jute.

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The experiment was conducted to find out the effect of weeding and thinning practices on the fibre yield and economics of white jute at Dhaka and Manikganj in 2006. Jute variety CVL-1 was used as study material. Treatments were five different combination of weeding and thinning operations viz. T₁=3 hand weeding at 15, 30 and 45 days after sowing (DAS); T₂=1 raking at 15 DAS and two weeding at 30 and 45 DAS; T₃=2 raking at 15 and 30 DAS and 1 weeding at 45 DAS; T₄=1 raking at 15 DAS, 1 weeding at 30 DAS, tanabach at 60 DAS and katabach at 80 DAS and T₅=No raking and weeding (control). Results revealed that plant height, base diameter, fibre and stick yield were significantly influenced at the combination of weeding & thinning operations. The highest fibre and stick yields were obtained from the treatment T₁. But the combination of weeding and thinning operation in T₃ gave better fibre yield (2.00 & 2.05 t/ha) at lower cost along with the highest net profit (11324.22 & 11728.09 Tk/ha) and the highest benefit cost ratio (1.53 & 1.54) at both the locations Dhaka and Manikganj.

Objectives:

1. To find out the effect of weeding and thinning practices on the fibre yield and economics of white jute.

2. Searching for ways and means to reduce labour cost through manipulating weeding and thinning operation, to make jute production more profitable or sustainable under present situation.

Methodology:

The experiment was carried out at two different locations viz. Manik Mia Avenue, Dhaka and Jute Agriculture experimental Station Manikganj in 2006. White jute (Corchorus capsularis L.) variety CVL-1 was used as study material. The treatments were five different combination of weeding and thinning operations viz. T₁ = 3 weeding at 15, 30 and 45 DAS (W15+W30+W45), T₂ = 1 raking at 15 DAS and 2 weeding at 30 and 45 DAS (R15+W30+W45); T₃ = 2 raking at 15 and 30 DAS and one weeding at 45 DAS ( R15+R30+W45); T₄ = 1 raking at 15 DAS, one weeding at 30 DAS, tanabach at 60 DAS and katabach at 80 DAS (R15+W30+T60+K80) and T₅ = No raking and no weeding i.e. control (R0+W0), where W = Weeding, R= Raknig, T = Tanabach, K = Katabach and DAS = days after sowing. The experiment was laidout in RCBD with three replications. Seeds were sown on 28 March at Manikganj and 30 March at Dhaka. Fertilizer dose and plant protection measures were applied as per Bangladesh Jute Research Institute recommendation. The crops were harvested at field duration of 110 days in each location. Data of yield and all yield attributing characters were analyzed statistically. The mean difference among the treatments were adjudged by the New Duncan`s Multiple Range Test. Economic analysis was done on the basis of prevailing market price of the input and output products.

Achievement/Findings:

The highest fibre and stick yields were obtained from the treatment T₁. But the combination of weeding and thinning operation in T₃ gave better fibre yield (2.25-2.27 t/ha) at lower cost along with the highest net profit (Tk. 14848.00-15489.21 Tk/ha) and the highest benefit cost ratio (1.67-1.72).
