Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Crop simulation models reliably predict the effect of soil, climate and variety on crop yield. To predict a particular crop with a particular variety and soil profile data historical climatic data is required. In addition, the duration of development stages especially phasic (phonological) development must be quantified to run the crop model for prediction of the yield of a particular variety. Genetic co-efficient is the factor that represents the varietal characteristics, which will be ultimately used to estimate the effect of soil and climatic effect on crop yield. Maize is an important crop which has greater prospects in Bangladesh and potential yield of maize with different scenario of soil, weather, variety and other management practices can effectively be simulated using DSSAT crop model

Objectives:

To evaluate the potential yield of maize using DSSAT crop model
To evaluate the effect of soil and climate on the potential yield of maize
To calculate the genetic co-efficient for major BARI released maize varieties.

Methodology:

For the first year of study, we have installed the software at Soil Science Division Computer Lab and tried to setup initial requirements for the smooth run of the model. Weather file for the Joydebpur location was constructed earlier in a separate study by S. Akhter in her Ph.D study and being used in this study effectively. One standard soil profile is constructed for Joydebpur location considering the a standard soil profile of BARI farm. Genetic co-efficient Farmers can change cultivars in order to maximize yield. The DSSAT 3.5 crop models also have the ability to take that source of variability into account. For each model, the cultivars are characterized by a specific set of genetic coefficients. These coefficients express the genetic potential of each genotype independently of all environmental constraints: soil, weather, etc. By simulating the yield of different cultivars in different conditions, it is possible to select the one(s) that best explore the available resources (DSSAT VOL 1 manual). Steps followed in the study: Using XCREATE to Construct a FILEX for Potential Production XCREATE is the tool in DSSAT v3.5 used to construct and modify the FILEX, or experimental file. The simplest X-file describes potential crop production, limited only by the genetic potential of the crop and the environment (exclusive of rainfall). The file is created to add complexity to the system by adding in water and nitrogen stress. Using XCREATE we have constructed a potential template production experiment. Then with trial error testing, we gain familiarity with the XCREATE interface and identified which inputs are and are not required for estimating potential production

Achievement/Findings:

Crop system simulation model is a powerful tool for efficient evaluation of risks and returns associated with alternative variety, soil and water management technologies. The success of the model validation is the importance of maintaining a high quality of data collection and laboratory analysis particularly soil data. There should be one standard format for minimum data set for all experiments of BARI especially breeding, soil science and agronomy division which will be used for long run crop simulation models use. Soil Science division of BARI has initiated the system research works for different potential crops which will help the nation for identifying the prospects and constraints of sustained crop production.
