Assessment of Mycorrhizal Association in Orchids

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

The association of mycorrhizal fungi with orchid roots is usually considered to be a mutualistic symbiosis. Though extensive studies have been made on mycorrhizal association in agricultural and forest tree species, information is limited on their occurrence in orchid plants. So, the present work is undertaken to study the mycorrhizal status in orchid plants.Ten orchid plants were selected in Horticulture Research Centre, BARI, Gazipur during 2004-2005. Rhizosphere soils of these selected orchids were collected and assessed to estimate the spore population. Among the ten orchid plants, the highest spore number (226.7 per 100 g soil) were found in the rhizosphere of Spathoglottis plicata (white). The lowest number of spores were found in Arundina graminifolia. A greater number of mycorrhizal spores were present in rhizosphre soil of Geodorum (199.0 per 100 g soil), Spathoglottis plicata (196.7 per 100 g soil) and Phaius tankervillae (176.7 per 100 g soil). These are first year observations, the programme will be continued in the next year.

Achievement/Findings:

The lowest number of spores were found in Arundina graminifolia. A greater number of mycorrhizal spores were present in rhizosphre soil of Geodorum (199.0 per 100 g soil), Spathoglottis plicata (196.7 per 100 g soil) and Phaius tankervillae (176.7 per 100 g soil).
