Effect of Double Transplanting on the Growth and Yield of T. Aman Rice

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Double transplanting method is believed to give higher grain yield of T.Aman rice in the Rangpur areas of Bangladesh. To verify this idea an experiment was conducted in the 1993 and 1994 Aman season with 3 rice varieties (BR11, BR25 and Nizersail) and transplanting methods (single and double transplanting) using a factorial ReB design. The treatments were replicated four times. Experimental results showed that seedling quantity, seedling height increased in this method and at least 2-3 times more area can be transplanted. So the method is profitable to the farmer of this area. On the other hand, taller seedlings are well suited to the uncontrolled water depth. Double transplanting may be done with BR11 and BR25 where taller seedling is required in uncontrolled water depth for proper establishment of Transplant Aman rice.

Objectives:

To verify the idea that double transplanting could increase the yield of T.Aman rice.

Methodology:

Two experiments were conducted in BRRI Regional Station, Rangpur farm during 1993 and 1994 seasons. The soil falls under Tista Flood plain agroecological Zone. The soil pH, organic matter, total N, Zn and S of the experimental land were 5.91, 1.73%,0.09%, 1.16 ppm and 15.5 ppm respectively. Primarily, seedlings were raised in a dry seedbed. Seeds of Nizersail, BR11 and BR25 were seeded on 10 June in 1993 and 12 June in 1994. From dry beds seedling were uprooted 25 days after seeding. Then they were transplanted in a well-puddled field with closer spacing. After 25 days of first transplanting, the seedlings were again uprooted and finally planted in the main field with 20 x 20cm spacing. Nitrogen at the rate of 10 kg/ha was used in dry bed and further 10 kg was used at first transplanting. Normal seedlings grown in puddled bed and 30 day-old seedlings were transplanted in main field as per treatments at the same date of double transplanted crop. The experiments were conducted in RCB design. Three varieties and 2 transplanting methods were laid out in a factorial RCB design. The treatments were replicated four times. The unit plot size was 5 X 3m and spacing 20 X 20cm. N, P₂0₅, K₂0 and S were applied at 80:60:40:10 kg/ha in the form of urea, triple superphosphate (TSP), muriate of potash (MP) and gypsum, respectively. Urea was applied in two splits; at maximum tillering and 7 days before panicle initiation. TSP and MP was applied as basal during final land preparation. Other crop management practices were given at the optimum level. Parameters studied in the experiment were - Plant height, Tiller number, Panicles/m', Yield component, Grain yield and benefit-cost ratio. Data were analyzed and mean difference was obtained by DMRT.

Achievement/Findings:

Double transplanted T. Arnan rice did not increase yield over normal transplanting. Two to three times more area may be covered and taller seedlings are obtained with double transplanting method, which may give more economic benefit to the farmer than normal transplanting. This cultural practice may be used in other areas where taller seedlings are required in T. Arnan season due to uncontrolled water depth.
