Two pot experiments on the effect of different sources of AM fungi on brinjal and tomato seedlings were conducted in the net house of Soil Science Division, BARI, Gazipur for two years during early kharif season, 2004 and rabi season 2004-05. Eight sources of AM fungi viz. AM01, AM02, AM03, AM04, AM05, AM06, AM07 and AM08 collected from different fruit species were studied along with a Control on brinjal and tomato seedlings in both the years. Soil based AM inoculum at the rate of 50g pot-1 was used. Two years average biomass yield of tomato increased from 24 to 56 percent over control by inoculation with different sources of AM. The highest biomass yield was observed with AM01. Two years average biomass yield of brinjal increased from 11 to 43 percent over control by inoculation with different sources of AM. The highest biomass yield was observed with AM05. Uptake of all the nutrients by brinjal and tomato seedlings was also improved by inoculation with AM fungi. The AM fungi from all the sources appeared to be effective in enhancing the growth and development of both tomato and brinjal seedlings

01. To observe the effect of different sources of AM fungi on the performance of tomato and brinjal seedlings,

02. To identify better source(s) of AM for producing tomato and brinjal seedlings

03. To produce tomato and brinjal seedlings with AM colonization.

Two pot experiments on the effect of different sources of AM fungi on brinjal and tomato seedlings were conducted in the net house of Soil Science Division, BARI, Gazipur for two consecutive years during early kharif season, 2004 and rabi season 2004-05. The experiment was laid out in RCBD with four replications. Eight different sources of AM fungi viz. AM01, AM02, AM03, AM04, AM05, AM06, AM07 and AM08 collected from different fruit species were studied along with a Control on brinjal and tomato seedlings. Black plastic pots of 15cm in diameter and 12cm in height were used in the study. A hole of 6cm in diameter and 5cm in depth was dug at the center of the potting media. The soil based AM inoculum at the rate of 50g pot-1 with AM spores and infected root pieces of the host plants was placed in the hole. A soil layer of about 1cm was spread on the inoculum layer. Seeds were sown in the soil layer above the inoculum to ensure penetration of the roots through the inoculum layer immediately after germination. The seedlings were thinned out within a week of emergence keeping five uniform seedlings per pot. Watering and other intercultural operations were done as and when necessary. The yield components of the seedlings were recorded on the day of harvesting. The seedlings were harvested carefully by uprooting. Roots of the seedlings were washed to remove the adhered soils. Root samples were then excised for AM colonization studies. Soil samples from the pot were collected during harvesting the seedlings for counting AM spore population. The spore numbers were determined by wet sieving and decanting method. To assess AM root colonization, the roots were processed and observed under a compound microscope.

Performance of Tomato seedlings Biomass yield and yield components like seedling height, number of leaves/seedling and collar diameter of tomato seedlings were significantly influenced by AM inoculation. Nutrient uptake by Tomato seedlings Uptake of all the major nutrients by tomato seedlings was improved by inoculation with AM fungi. As of the major nutrients uptake of all the micronutrients by tomato seedlings was also improved by inoculation with AM fungi. Performance of Brinjal seedlings Performance of brinjal seedlings was found to be significantly influenced by AM inoculation. Biomass yield and yield components like seedling height, number of leaves/seedling and collar diameter of brinjal seedlings were significantly influenced by AM inoculation. Nutrient uptake by Brinjal seedlings Uptake of all the major nutrients by brinjal seedlings was improved by inoculation with different sources of AM fungi. As of the major nutrients uptake of all the micronutrients by brinjal seedlings was also improved by inoculation with AM fungi. I is evident that AM fungi can improve nutrient uptake and growth and development of tomato and brinjal seedlings. The AM fungi from all the sources appeared to be effective in enhancing the growth and development of both tomato and brinjal seedlings. The fungi might be used to produce seedlings of these crops. Faster growth of seedlings might help to shorten the nursery life, and thereby would reduce the cost of seedling production. The AM inoculated seedlings might also perform better in the field because the AM fungi could be carried over to the field through the colonized roots. Field studies with AM inoculated seedlings might also be initiated
