Management of BRRI Network and Internet Connectivity

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

A Network Management System (NMS) is a combination of hardware and software used to monitor and administer a computer network or networks. Individual network elements (NEs) in a network are managed by an element management system. An NMS manages the network elements, also called managed devices. Device management includes faults, configuration, accounting, performance, and security (FCAPS) management. BRRI follows this NMS as well as including discover network inventory, monitoring device and status, providing alerts to conditions that impact system performance, and identification of problems, their source(s) and possible solutions.

Objectives:

To manage and maintain ICT network of BRRI.

Methodology:

The International Organization for Standardization (ISO) network management model defines five functional areas of network management. ICT Cell follows that method to maintain properly the network management of BRRI. This document covers all functional areas. The overall purpose of this document is to provide practical recommendations on each functional area to increase the overall effectiveness of current management tools and practices. BRRI follows the five functional areas of network management and maintain internet connectivity. ICT network of BRRI is managed and maintained by ICT Cell, Agricultural Statistics Division with the help of the Network developer company and our ICT trained manpower. We have increased our DDN (Digital Data Network) bandwidth connectivity from 1 to 4 Mbps by optical fiber network from BTCL. It was connected with BRRI-HQ-LAN by using DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) and manual system. Now our internet speed is faster than previous once.

Achievement/Findings:

We already have given internet connection in 300 computers. But we want to increase more internet connection. So we have started to increase our bandwidth connectivity from 4 Mbps to 8 Mbps as per requirement of BRRI scientists and officers. Hopefully, within short time all the BRRI scientists and officers will get more speed for internet access with smooth communication and they will be benefited to pass information internally as well as globally.
