Effect of Mahogony Fruit Parts Extract Against Bph and Different Concentration of Mahogony Seed Kernel Extracts Against Rice Hispa

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

Different parts of mahogony fruit part extracts and different ratios of mahogony seed kernel extracts were evaluated against brown planthopper (BPH) and rice hispa respectively in the green house. Plain water extract of air-dried seed kernel of Mahogany (1:10 w/v) effectively controlled (84.72%) BPH adult at 72 hrs after spray. Other parts of the seeds were not effective. The seed kernel extract at the ratio of 1:5 w/v controlled 63.33% of the total population rice hispa.

Methodology:

Different parts of mahogony fruit namely; seed kernel, seed coat, seed kernel with seed coat, fruit cover with inflorescence and whole fruit extract were tested on BPH nymph under net house conditions. Parts of mahogony fruits were separated, chopped and air-dried. Then the fruit parts were grinded (using grind mill); and soaked in water for 12 hrs with test materials-water ration of 1:10 w/v. The water-soaked materials were boiled for 5 minutes and then sieved through nylon net to get the final extract for spray. Three hills (5-6 tiller per hill) of BR3 plants were grown in a pot of 20 cm dia at equal distances from hill to hill. The pots were covered by mylar cages at 40 DAT. Ten BPH nymphs (2nd-3rd instar) were released in each pot before 24 hrs of spray. Again, five different ratios of mahogony seed kernel and water (1:5, 1:7.5, 1:10, 1:15 and 1:20 w/v) were tested against rice hispa under net house condition. To prepare the extract, air-dried seed kernel was either cut into pieces or crushed and was thoroughly mixed with required amount of water for each treatment. After 12 hrs of soaking, each of the mixture was boiled for 5 minutes and then sieved through two-folded nylon net to get the final extract. Three hills of rice variety BR3 were planted in a pot of 20 cm dia at equal distances from hill to hill. The pots were covered by mylar cages at 45 DAT. Five pairs of adult rice hispa were released on each pot. After 24 hrs of insect release, the plants were sprayed by a hand sprayer. Both the experiment were designed in CRD with 4 replications, considering each pot as a replicate.

Achievement/Findings:

Among the fruit parts, mahogony seed kernel reduced the highest numbers of BPH nymphs throughout the observation period. At 24 hrs after spray the mortality was 63.61% with the seed kernel extract and it increased gradually to 84.72% after 72 hrs of spray. Mortality due to other extract also increased gradually with time but none reached more than 36% at 72 hrs of spray. Thus mahogony seed kernel extract proved to be an effective control agent of BPH. Seed kernel extracts at the ratios of 1:5 and 1:7.5 w/v caused comparatively higher mortalities of rice hispa (54.17% and 49.17%, respectively) after 24 hrs of spray. Mortality increased gradually and reached 63.33 and 50.76% respectively at 72 hrs of spray. The other concentrations caused 5 - 38.82 % mortality after 72 hrs of spray.
