Design and Development of a Multicrop Paddle Thresher

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

For development of multi crop paddle thresher two prototypes have been designed and fabricated. The test results were not convincing. A third prototype was designed, fabricated and tested with paddy which showed the capacity of 55-60kg/men-hr.

Objectives:

To increase threshing efficiency using manpower
To thresh different crops by a single thresher.

Methodology:

This plan was undertaken with a view to develop a paddle thresher for threshing both wheat and paddy. Primarily, rasp bar cylinder with concave was thought to be suitable for wheat threshing and with loops for paddy. Accordingly, two different provided with a 760 mm dia and 230 mm wide cylinder. Six rasp bars were placed on the cylinder. The upper concave was provided with peg-teeth for improved stripping action even at low speed. This prototype was too heave and took much energy for operating. The threshing efficiency was not satisfactory. The second prototype was smaller in size with 460 mm dia and 230 mm width. The concave was improved and rasp bars replaced by fixing some 6.3 mm dia parallel rods on the cylinder developing a serrated face.

Achievement/Findings:

This second prototype had better efficiency but the capacity was only 15-20 kg/hr which was not competitive with manual threshing. The third prototype had detachable flat bars containing wire loop for paddy threshing. Test with paddy threshing showed the capacity of 55-60 kg/man-hr. Another new design supposed to have peg teeth cylinder with concave containing peg teeth partly and open grate party is underway.
