Modification of BRRI Diaphragm Pump

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To reduce the energy equipment and to improve the longevity of the diaphragm of BRRI diaphragm pump a plan has been taken to modify it. T-shaped suction manifold and rectangular boxes have been replaced by y-shaped manifold and circular boxes. The Fulcrum and lever were also modified.

Methodology:

In a performance test of commonly used manual pumps in Bangladesh the BRRI diaphragm pump performed better up to 3 meters head. Beyond three meters head it required too much energy which made it difficult to operate the pump even for a very short period. Moreover Rectangular boxes reduced longevity of the rubber diaphragms due to uneven stress concentration caused by the rectangular diaphragm fastener frame. To remove these problems the T-shaped suction manifold has been replaced by a-Y-shaped manifold. Which would reduce force requirement (by reducing friction losses) enabling a easy passage of water movement. To improve the longevity of the diaphragm rectangular boxes have been replaced by circular boxes which would provide uniform stress distribution at the diaphragm fastener ring. To operate for longer period of time the pump is modified to be operated by hand/foot action so that the operator could use his body weight.

Achievement/Findings:

The modified diaphragm pump is of 35.6 cm(14”) dia circular shaped unit having a height of 15.25 cm (6.0 inch) and a volume of 0.015 m3 (0.54 ft3). The -Y- shaped suction manifold made from 7.62 cm (3”-O” dia) GI pipe and the round boxes made of 14 gage steel sheet. The fulcrum and the lover were modified for operation by human foot. The estimated cost of the pump was Tk 1400.
