Development of an Improved Country Plough Drawn by Single Animal

Abstract/ Executive Summary:

To minimize the soil forces acting on the plough share, to drive maximum power from the animal by redesigning the nick harness and to obtain better tilth development of an an improved country plough drawn by single animal is in progress. Three ploughs were fabricated and tested of which the latest one was found promising.

Objectives:

To improve/modify design to minimize soil forces acting on the plough share
To derive maximum power from the animal by redesigning the neck harness
To pulverize and work the soil for better tilth specially in upland condition

Methodology:

The existing animal drawn plough in Bangladesh has a narrow soil cutting share; major soil breaking operation is done by the blunt faces of the wooden plough bottom behind the share, requiring high pulling force. A wide strip remains unploughed in between two consecutive trips and about five to seven tilling operations are required for the satisfactory preparation of a land. To overcome this difficulty ploughs with relatively large share and mold-boards have been fabricated in BRRI Engineering workshop and tested in the field; gradual improvement of the plow was made by altering the shape and size of the share through field testing (within BRRI campus). In this way three plows were fabricated and tested.

Achievement/Findings:

The latest design was found comparable to the existing country plough in soil cutting, depth of tillage, and pulling force but its performance was better in pulverizing the soil (particularly better in sandy loam soil) and its wider cut in the deeper zone of furrow. The latest design f the improved plough is shown in Figure 11. Its cost is around Tk 200.00. The tests were conducted by pulling the ploughs with a pair of bullocks to find a suitable shape of plough share and mold board which will be adapted to single animal, keeping depth of tillage the same.
